Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

  • in-place editing based on client side data cache.

    Hi,
    I want to use the in-place editing option of the list.
    The issue is that i want it for an offline application.
    The data I want to display will be based on client side data cache. I want to filter that list and fill in another column of the list,

    The client side data cache contains the items.
    itemcode,itemdesc,itemtype
    the list contains
    itemcode,itemdesc
    I wat to allow the user to select itemdescription (making the item description a dropdown list) in-place edit.
    the items displayed should be filtered based on itemtype variable
    then when the user select an item, I want to fill the itemcode in the list.

    has anybody done something similar?

    Thank you for any input

    Paul

      Is the question how to populate the dropdown from the client-side data cache? Filter the list of choices? Or how to update the other values?

      The in-place editing documentation has an example of changing the dropdown. You could use this approach to set the data values.

      You could also look at using a client-side Data Series. If you go the route of the client-side data series, you could do something like this in the settings that define the dropdown options:

      Code:
      var choices = [];

      if ({dialog.object}._dataSeriesData) {
          var productIds = {dialog.object}._dataSeriesData.products.ProductID;
          var productNames = {dialog.object}._dataSeriesData.products.ProductName;
          var discontinued = {dialog.object}._dataSeriesData.products.Discontinued;
          var _d = A5.makeArrayOfArrays(productNames,productIds,discontinued); //undocumented; will fix
          for (var i = 0; i < _d.length; i++) {
              if (_d[i][2] === "F") {
                  choices.push([_d[i][0],_d[i][1]]);
              }
          }

      }

      return choices;
      You can use the field's onChange event to repopulate the choices. Or set values in other controls.

      TIP: This will fetch data from the current selected list row:

      Code:
      var lobj = {dialog.object}.getControl("LIST1"); // replace with your list's id
      if (lobj) {
          var selectedData = lobj.selectionData[0];
      }
      If you provide some specifics, I'll add some How To articles.

        Hi Sarah,
        Thank you for your reply.
        What I want to do is the following:

        1-I have a data series with the following field:
        ProductId
        ProductDescription
        ProductType

        2-I have a list with the following columns:
        ProductId
        ProductsDescription
        Qty
        Producttype

        I want to allow the user to change/add a row to the list
        The productdescription should be a dropdown based on the dataserie filtered for 1 productype.
        When the user selects a productdescription then the productid (in that list) should be filled.

        I think the solution you provided should work, but I am currently working on something else.
        I should work on this probably on wednesday.

        Thank you again for your help

        Paul
