Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Alpha on IIS server

    Hi Everybody,

I have Alpha set up on IIS. I get this error when I try to publish:

    Error Reporting to IIS:
IIS Web Deploy needs to be installed
Type 'Deployer' could not load type information
Could not load file or assembly 'Microsoft.Web.Deployment, Version=7.1.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=blahblahblah' or one of its dependencies.
The system cannot find the file specified.

If anyone knows where to look to fix this, lay it on me. I've struggled for days. Followed the instructions for installing IIS and Alpha IIS Server on a new server. Double-checked that ports were open. Re-set up IIS Web Deployment. I set up the Alpha Dev app for IIS. When I hit pubish, the error above appears.

FWIW: I can run the regular Alpha server on my Server 2012 machine, and it works. FTP works, and other things I've set up. It's an Amazon instance set up just to deploy and test Alpha IIS. If you want credentials to log in and poke around, let me know! There's nothing personal on there.

      Re: Alpha on IIS server

Thanks Frank. I didn't think anyone would even dare to respond to my long question.

I did set up and re-set-up Web deploy 3.5. I didn't mention the version I had set up on my original post.

If you've got this working, then I probably zigged where I should have zagged somewhere. I've even tried disabling the firewall, so I don't think that's it. I'm restarting again, and I may go to my server guru and have him take a look. He has no Alpha experience, but maybe he'll see something weird.

I'm still welcoming any other suggestions. HOPEFULLY NONE of you got this working smoothly the first time. That's mean. But it would make me feel normal. -Derek

Did you set it up on you DEVELOPER MACHINE & the server?

Here's my procedure (on a 2008R2 box as the server)

        DEVELOPER MACHINE:
        ==================
Web Deploy 3.5 installeren (=separate download)
IIS manager for remote administration (optional)

        SERVER:
        =======
        Start Server manager
        Add Role
        IIS
Web Server (IIS) / Add Role Service
        Web Server / Application Development
        ASP.NET
Web Server / Health & Diagnostics
Tracing (only on a test & development server not for production)
        Management
        Management Service

Web Server (IIS) / Remove Role Service
Web Server / Common HTTP features
        Directory browsing

Web Platform installer installeren (=separate download)
Restart IIS Server Manager so that Web Platform Installer becomes visible

        Start Web Platform Installer
search for "Application initialization 1.0" & install

Install Web Deploy 3.5 using the OFFLINE (!) installer & make sure that the IIS Deployment Handler module gets installed as well
Web Deploy 3.5 offline installer download: http://www.iis.net/downloads/microso...ionalDownloads
Attention: DO NOT install via Web Platform Installer because then IIS Deployment Handler module will not get installed (you can fix that by running the offline installer & update the installation to include the deployment handler)

Install Alpha Anywhere Application Server for IIS

Start Management / Management Service in IIS Server Manager & select "Enable remote connections"

Start Alpha Anywhere Application Server / Direct Publishing in IIS Server Manager & selecteer "Enable direct publishing"

          Re: Alpha on IIS server

I did not set it up on my developer machine. Good eye!

Doing that now and reporting back if I'm still in the weeds. Thank you thank you.

            Re: Alpha on IIS server

Confirming that installing Web Deploy 3.5 on my dev machine, too, did indeed fix that error. Thanks again, Frank!

For the record, now I'm getting an error that port 135 DCom-In is not available. But, that's a subject for another thread. First, I'll put in a few hours trying to fix the problem myself. I'll be using Franks notes and reviewing the Alpha steps again.

                Re: Alpha on IIS server

It's still a beta product, do not use in production. I think it'll be generally available before devcon 2015 in sept. I will most certainly move to IIS.

                  Re: Alpha on IIS server

Just curious, will it be possible with Alpha running on IIS to run ASP.Net pages alongside Alpha web pages?

                    Re: Alpha on IIS server

There shouldn't be any issue running ASP.Net in the same web site under IIS as Alpha. Alpha is just running as a standard IIS add-in (similar to PHP) so you should be able to easily mix-and-match pages in the same domain.
