Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Suggestions Are Most Welcome

I've got an app consisting of 3 grids. I'd like to start using the UX components and have watched a lot of videos over the last 3-4 days. However, I can't say that I have even a fairly clear plan of attack. What I have are three tables, Customers, Worksites and Sales. Using the grids, the parent is the Customers table. Linked to it with a 1:M relationship is the worksites table and linked to the Worksites table 1:M is the sales table. This is because many customers have more than one worksite and each worksite could have as many as 12 sales.

With a UX, no doubt there are several ways to show and or enter data. Perhaps the easiest is to use a UX for the Customers table and embed a grid containing the worksites and another grid linked to that with the Sales grid. I'm not satisfied with that because I don't thing the UX components are used even close to it's potential. I've thought about using a list control for the Worksites table with another list control for the sales table.

The grids look and work fine. However, with all the bars, it looks too 'busy' and takes away the simplicity of the design. Thus, I would be most obliged to entertain any suggestions for the best way to use the UX and the available features. No doubt, there will be a good number of other folk who will benefit from this as well.

can you provide a login? I am a visual learner. I would like to just test drive it, enter data - maybe complain, offer advice - etc.

isn't panel cards and navigator supposed to do this kind of work?
the main panel will show in a list all the customers name, then click on a customer, the panel should slide out and all the worksite should come for that customer, then click on the worksite all the sales should come for that worksite for that customer, then you can click on the sales the detail should come or push a button to add another sales. then on the top click back button to go back at any point.
alpha anywhere is designed for mobile friendly or mobile mainly scenario. the logic seems possible for me. I don't have version 12 as you know, so I cannot be definite.
but that is what I do with jquery mobile in my mobile app using version 11.

        Re: Suggestions Are Most Welcome

If you're asking me, I don't know. I haven't seen any videos or found any articles which pull it all together, sort of a synopsis. There's a lot of individual videos but nothing which lays out a total overview. To get to the point to where one ends up with a decent app using UX components, the first thing is to watch the videos and then start with one piece and try to build on it. Oh oh, which 'one piece' is that? What should be created first?

There's a ton of time to be spent with trial and error and then add the fact, that some of this changes so fast the videos are not up to date. Often the video is for a version or two ago and the newer version doesn't always follow the video.

Providing accurate up to date videos is nothing less than a full time job. In lieu of that, learning what others are doing would save newbies (even not so newbies) to the UX, a TON of time and frustration, to say the least. The fact that the question was asked, indicates there is no information on this subject; which shows that an overview is greatly needed. Ahhh, Alpha's growing pains.......

I have no idea what you mean by, "can you provide a login"? Login to/for what?

while I really don't have access to version 12, I found this youtube video that shows my way of doing the stuff you want.
            https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VBbkN8syDyo
to make it work you should have
a panel navigator set to let to right which is default. (inside of which )
panel card 1 - customer list - on select event will move you to the panel card 2
panel card 2 - worksite list - on select event will move you to the panel card 3
panel card 3 - work list or sales list -on select event will move you to the panel card 4
panel card 4 - detail of the sales with add, edit and delete buttons at the bottom
            end panel navigator

once you get the idea modifying to your need is a breeze.
            take a look.
the example is in ipad when you view in iPhone the panels should slide out.

While I haven't watched the entire video yet, Selwyn states this is for a mobile application. Can it also be used as a web based app? If AA is truly to be used everywhere, then the answer to my question should be "yes". Right now, my customer uses an old Alpha4 app with one table. It has somewhere around 50 fields and they simply just tab from one to another. It's very difficult for them to imagine using a mouse and they want it set up to use the keyboard as much as possible. That said, the new design alone will speed things up and overall, even though the mouse will be used 50% (a guess), I suspect once they get used to it, it will be faster than the current app. Along with that, I wonder about using a touchscreen. While I have no info to base this on, I suspect a keyboard along with the couch screen would be even faster and virtually no need for the mouse. Of course a desktop touch screen must be in a location to make that work.

Assuming the use of panels on a desktop, using a mouse or touch, then the app should, for the most part, be ready to go mobile. Is this a logical thinking or am I missing something? For now, it's back to the video.

                Ken,
I'm sorry I thought you had something already developed but wanted to switch it up using a UX.
I think the best way to design the UX is to figure out the heirarchy of what your work flow is.
Then, you can create the presentation of the panel cards.

In fact I would create the shell without all the data fields first.
                In other words.
                Main Menu
                Customers
                Invoices
                Sales
Then put some navigation elements (buttons) in panel headers or footers.

Now, do you use lists in panel cards? Do you embed a UX, or a Grid in panel cards?
OR do you just stick with grids?

Personally, I think it would be best to determine the end user presentation and go from there.
If it is a desktop with lots of real estate, It would be really easy to create a tabbed UI and grids and be done.

I think a single UX application takes a little more time, and a list control would take even more but both have little advantages that I prefer for Mobile devices - not that you cannot set the width for a grid but to me a list control is waaay easier to setup for a mobile device platform.
Thats a personal opinion but anyone proficient in any individual method would argue that their way is easier (right?)

If all I had was 3 tables, and the desire to make it mobile friendly I would use a UX with list controls.
The list control builders make it a breeze, and they can have detail views for editing and offline capabilities.
Then there is always the advantage of using a UX not unlike a tabbedUI and present a menu to include the embedded UX or grid.

I think the best video out there on layout with AA is here

                  Re: Suggestions Are Most Welcome

i cannot for sure say that panels will work in a desktop. it is meant for the mobile market.
on the other hand, panels mimic jquery mobile so it is possible they have the ux running jquery behind it, so it might work.
the jquery mobile app i have works both on desktop and on the phone jquery mobile accepts mouse clic and touch as same so is okay, (where as ratchet does not it works only with mobile)
so design a simple no nonsense hello world.
put a panel navigator, in side the panel navigator and put a panel card to say who i ken? and the second one to say "ken is great with alpha programming" and connect this two and see if it works mobile, browser and desktop. if it does then crossing atlantic is just a swim.

                    gandhi,

Thank you for the link. It is very informative. After viewing it, I looked up the 'mobile' videos and began watching those as well. Check out this link for use of panels on the desktop. It begins about the 3.40 minute mark.

                    Charles,

Yes, I found this one in the video list and I agree, it is the type of presentation for which I have been looking. I'm not quite understanding how the list controls all fit in but realize their use in a web or mobile app. Your suggested layout is what I figured would be the best approach. The major problem with this stuff is even if I worked with it 24/7, there is still not enough time to adequately explore and accomplish creating the app. But, one step at a time.

Thank you both for your contributions. I am beginning to feel like I am making progress.
