Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Error printing reports - Alpha Five Printer not installed

    Hello all,

After many hours and help from Nate at Zebra Hosting I managed to get my project online but when I go to print a report I get:

"Report did not print. Error reported was: Report Server: 'Alpha Five Printer' (for creating PDF, RTF and HTML output) is not installed. Re-install Alpha Anywhere Application Server at line: 40"

I re-installed the server and I still have the same problem. My reports use the option for PDFDirect. Any ideas?

    Thanks

    Are you running the WAS?

What version of Alpha are you running? Alpha has been doing a lot of work on pdf actions. I just tested it on the latest official release 7554-5566. It worked for me.

Does it print when using the Development Server?

Change the "Initial View" option to PDF and see if it prints with the Amyuni printer. That will indicate that any filters or arguments are correctly defined.

You might try completely deleting the WAS on the web server and re-installing from scratch.

Hi PD, thanks for the reply and sorry for my late response, been a bit under the weather.

      Yes, running WAS
      Stable release 7564-5566 (latest one)
Yes, okay using the Development Server

I've been having trouble with these reports for a little while. It's a L-O-N-G story that I won't bore you with. Anyway, I moved all my reports from the control panel to the web projects (that is part of the long frustrating saga, not worth asking me about :) ) and now the reports work.

Interestingly, running them in Chrome works just dandy for me, as in, click the button, they open on-screen in PDF. I asked someone else to test them on his PC and they don't work the same, as in a) they do the Working... message, he eventually can download and and open them but the Working... screen stays up or b) it just displays the Working... screen and nothing happens. I'm guessing it's some setting in his browser but not sure where to look.

Anyway, thanks for replying, I appreciate it.

      -John

I'm sure you've checked, but make sure you are running the same release on the WAS and the development server.

I am still having trouble with several pdf actions in 7564-5566. For example {dialog.object}.pdfViewerLoad() has a known bug. Selwyn says it is fixed in 7564-5566, but it still does not work for me.

just 2 things we experienced :

          1. (long ago) take care that the default printer on your server is pointing to the alpha five printer
          2. recently: third party software was blocked by the windows defender virus scanner. When disabled it everything worked ok, First we tried bitdefender as alternative scanner: same issue. Then we installed f-secure as scanner and everything worked smooth again.

Yesterday I found that the creation of some .pdfs that have been working fine for years are failing. The pdfs are not being created. After many hours I tracked down a problem...

            From the release notes:

Xbasic - a5w_report_saveas(), a5w_letter_saveas() and a5w_label_saveas() - The functions now all now use the PDFDOCGEN format which does not use the Amyuni primter driver. If you want to force these functions to use the Amyuni printer driver specify the save as format as PDFAMYUNI.

NOTE: The PDFAMYUNI option will only work if the Amyuni PDF Printer drivers have been installed. If Alpha Anywhere was installed using the Universal Installer, the Amyuni printer drivers will not have been installed.
This was introduced in 7554-5566 (3/12/21). The only documentation on this that I have found is the release notes.

I have some pdfs that are produced using a5w_letter_saveas(). Some, but not all of these are failing - the pdf does not get created, and no error is generated.

I have found a fix for it. This uses the example from https://documentation.alphasoftware....20Function.xml

            This fails (sometimes):
            a5w_letter_saveAs("customer List","PDF","","","c:\data\custlist.pdf",global_variables())
            This succeeds:
            a5w_letter_saveAs("customer List","PDFAMYUNI","","","c:\data\custlist.pdf",global_variables())

But I still don't know what is causing this. It should work using the PDFDOCGEN format, when the code has "PDF".
And not all instances of a5w_letter_saveas() fail when using "PDF".
I installed using the Universal Installer. Perhaps it did not install some files.
And in the future when I upgrade hardware and install Alpha from scratch, I will not have the Amyuni printer drivers.

I suspect that whatever is causing this issue may also affect reports produced with PFDdirect.

              Hi Pizzadude,

I've been having problems with reports for a while now, which is a problem on the project I'm currently working on because it is report heavy. Currently the are around 100 reports and many more to go. I don't specifically save them like in the code you have above, I just have AA print them to the screen in PDF and allow the user to download and name them whatever they want. Still, not all the reports will print the first time the button is clicked, it will produce and error and then they have to click it again. Unfortunately it is always random.
