Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Notifications on logon

    I have a SaaS app that I want notifications to appear at user logon. I am using a TabbedUI.

    I don't anticipate there being many notifications, maybe one a week. The idea is to make each notification available for say 2 days to maximise the chance that people see it.

    I could have the app open with a "Notifications" tab (set "Auto launch on startup"). My concern with this approach is that people will just not read it even when there is something new because people get used to it being empty.

    How have others tackled this?

    So I thought I'd try in the TabbedUI server-side onLogin:

    Code:
    e.eventDataObject = "{logonMsg: 'blah blah'}"
    and on the client-side afterLogin:

    Code:
    if (e.eventDataObject && e.eventDataObject.logonMsg) {
    var msg = e.eventDataObject.logonMsg;
    setTimeout( function() {
    alert(msg);
    },2000);
    } else {
    setTimeout( function() {
    alert('no message');
    },2000);
    }
    However, I get no alert? I can get an alert in client-side onRenderComplete but e.eventDataObject is not available in that event.

    Am I missing something?

      Use state as variables as they are visible from client and server side..

      ' server-side beforeLogin:// this is OK as the client-side afterLogin has a condition - I don't know why but the onLogin seems to ignore the code.

      e._state.logonMsg = "Please note this week is important - please report to the principle."

      ' could be e._state.logonMsg = session.greeting

      //and on the client-side afterLogin:

      if({dialog.object}.stateInfo['logonMsg'] != '') {
      setTimeout( function() {
      alert({dialog.object}.stateInfo['logonMsg']);
      },2000);
      } else {
      setTimeout( function() {
      alert('no message');
      },2000);

      // just a suggestion - it works because I tested it.

        I have silly way of doing this but through database ,

        Add flag field to the user tables ..

        when the user logins increase the flag by 1

        so when the user login the flag will be 1 .. when you display the message for him make it 0 or when he log out make it 0 .

        so easily

        on page load after login

        write this code

        if flag = 1 then

        msgbox ('bla bla bla ')
        // note you can use alpha msgbox dialog
        flag = 0

        else

        end if

        I know this would be silly to achieve what you want but i am 100% it will work any where you place it :)

        Good luck ^_^

          I think you will struggle to get people to actually read stuff.
          We are bombarded with text and adverts to the extent that we get word blindness.
          One approach which works in Social Care apps isthat the user HAS to click a "Yep, got it!" button embeded in the message before they can proceed.
          Your users may not accept this, but if you want their attention, the messages need to be captivating or mandatory. Imho.

          Apologies to anyone I haven't managed to upset yet.
          You are held in a queue and I will get to you soon.

            Thanks for the suggestions. I settled on an ajaxCallback in the onRenderComplete of the UX that is set to "Auto launch on startup" in the TabbedUI.

            Code:
            {dialog.object}.ajaxCallback('','', 'getNotifications');
            I have an Xbasic function "getNotifications" that gets any notifications and returns javascript that pops up a nice A5.msgBox when notification(s) exist or otherwise does nothing.
