Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Post .DBF field to a MySQL table field

Is there a simple way to run a post operation that places a field in a dbf table to a MySql table? I tried doing this using Alpha Anywhere on the desktop with a SQL linked table but the operation has been at it for two hours so far and there is only roughly 10,000 records to compare. Im a newbie at the web stuff, I currently use navicat to manipulate all my sql tables, is there way to do this in navicat? Sorry if Ive left out information, but if you need more info please let me know, Thank you.

The only reason I need to do this is because we are in the process of converting all our dbf tables to sql and going strictly web based. Having said that, in the web based application they need to know a specific field in one of our dbf tables that has yet to be converted. As a quick fix, I added a field to the SQL table and wanted to post the dbf field to it.

You can make a connection string to the dbf table and then use the alpha to query against it as if it were an sql table.

MSSQL can open query against dbf and mdb files also, which is what I used when I converted. Navicat might be able to do the same.

When I select my table in navicat and select 'Import Wizard', I do see the options for importing data from a dbf table, using the wizard i see the option for update but its greyed out (I cant select it)? How do I enable this option. I have the purchased full version of navicat for windows.

I use MSSQL Server Management Studio, so I'm not sure I can help you here. However, it sounds like you have the option to import the data. If so, just do that. Import it into some table that you can use temporarily. After you import it, THEN run your MySQL queries to work with the data. Just get it into your database first, mess with it after. I've found that's a lot better than trying to mess with it while its being imported.

If by Post Operation is one of the built-in "Operations" available from the Alpha Control Panel, then no I don't see how you can do what you want. Those functions are specifically designed for DBF tables and have no knowledge of SQL tables. I mean you cannot do it within that Post Operation. But you could run your Post, then run some other process to move that results from your DBF to the SQL tables. By process here I mean some xbasic that opens the DBF tables, then moves those values in to the SQL tables. It would go similar to this:

          Run your Post
          open the dbf table
loop through the records, get the primary key and the values you want to send to the SQL table
open a connection to your sql database
for each record in the dbf table, find the matching record in the sql table based on the primary key
          UPDATE the sql table

If you elect to do it this way, I or someone else can be more specific with the syntax.

I imported the dbf table into a new SQL table. but still haven't figured out how to perform a "Post". Any help you can provide will be greatly appreciated, Steve.

Re: Post .DBF field to a MySQL table field

The post operation should run fine against the active link table. Not sure why it is taking over 2 hours? But then again, active-link tables are not the swiftest.

But you can use Navicat to import your dbf records.

Peter and others are correct, you can use Active Link. I don't even think in those terms anymore and have left DBF far behind. There are many good DBF and DBF Operations developers here but I always found those to be difficult to use. (I know my comments are irreverent in this case.)

For speed, upload the dbf to sql and create an update query in sql joining the 2 tables.

I read this and its exactly what I need, but the problem is, I'm not too sure how to accomplish that. I'm going to give this a try, of course I need to research the proper syntax. Thank You.

Heres what Ive got so far that doesnt seem to work
                    BEGIN
                    UPDATE main
                    SET main.JAC_PERIOD = temporary_apprentice.PERIOD
                    WHERE main.ssn = temporary_apprentice.ssn;
                    END
