Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Error when opening reports from web app

This error has stopped me in several projects, and I have scoured the forum to find someone with a similar issue. I've found a few that get the same error message, but there doesn't seem to be a solution.

    Here is the error:
Report did not print. Error reported was:
Property not found xx.last_button_pressed subelement not found. at line: 168

It occurs when I press a button that calls the action javascript to open a report (or letter, it's happened on both types for me). No settings changed. The letter is in Project. The letter has a SQL query as the datasource. No filter or anything in the design side of the layout.

Any ideas? I don't know what line 168 it's referring to, but I am definitely not calling the function "last_button_pressed" in any of my code. I'm not even sure what that means!

Does it work if you run it in an a5w page instead?

You should be able to take your UX for the app, put it in an a5w page and run it from a browser.

Let me make sure I followed your instructions - I placed the UX in an a5w page "test.a5w" and when I view that page in my browser I get the same behavior when I press the button to call the report.

Have you looked at the Xbasic tab on line 168, or when you run it in the browser, right-click and "view page source"? Maybe this could help narrow it down.

Yes, that was exactly what I was suggesting.

Did you check the java console (on the web page) to see what errors are coming up?

I think the error is referring to the button you pressed to run the report. The button would have an "up" event as well as several others. I would say check to make sure you don't have any code in an event that doesn't belong.

Also, I would recompile all controls on the UX.

Did you recently update your Alpha? What version are you using?

If you simply create a brand new UX with nothing on it but a button to run a report, does it work? (Either mobile or on an a5w page?)

Do you have ANY reports that work? If so, how are they different?

Nothing showing up on Java console.

when I look at line 168 on xbasic tab, inspect page in chrome, and several other places, it's generally just css style sheet, and nothing referring to buttons.

No other events except for "click" event - now the click event does currently have two actions on it - open the letter (the thing that is failing) and open a separate "zip code" report (which opens fine every time.) Same error occurs when I delete the second action that opens the report.

Running latest build (7902) on both my development desktop as well as the application server.

I have recalculated all controls. I have also tried a brand new UX with single button and the error still occurs.

Lots of other reports work. This one may be different as it's a letter, but I seem to recall seeing this same error come up a while back when I was doing a "letter" as a report instead. I will note that I get a "Working" message for 15-20 seconds prior to this error message popping up.

Additionally, the letter opens as desired when I try to open it from the development side. But as soon as I try to press the button to run the action javascript to run it, even on development computer, we get nowhere.

I would send it in as a bug report to Alpha. It sounds like you have done everything you can to figure it out. You will need to send the report file and the mysql table it runs from complete with at least some of the data.

Reference this forum post to show what you have already done to fix the issue yourself.

As a last resort you might try to update to the latest nightly build before sending in the report just in case it is something with your version that is already fixed.

You could also try going back one version with the same idea in mind.

If you want more to try:

Create a new letter based on a very simple table with just one field and a couple of records. Display that field in the letter and try to run it.

If your new letter still doesn't work, you can even send THAT one in instead.

Just an update - I tried creating a new letter and slowly adding components to make it similar to the letter that doesn't function - in an attempt to isolate where the issue is occurring.

It seems I get the xx.last_button_pressed subelement error when I refer to an Ask variable in the letter.

                Backing up a bit -

The letter uses a Rich Text Object as the main body of the letter text. There are several sections in which we have inserted If/Elseif statements to filter what the final letter text is. We have used this technique in Desktop Alpha for many many years, and I'm not sure how to get the data we need any other way.

A few of the if statements reference an ask variable (start date and end date) to filter.

I think I understand (sort of) why the report will work on my developer desktop but not on the web. The developer desktop version is able to prompt for Ask variables, whereas the web is getting data from two fields and they are being set as argument values. I think this is the issue - I must not be calling those two fields/arguments correctly.

Any suggestions? I know that several months ago I was working on a way to do this letter without the ask variables, but nothing seemed to give me the data I needed.

This component does date range - you would set Arguments on both controls to filter against.
