Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    saving a NEW RECORD

I am trying to finish an inventory application. in which I have a list control that is bound to a SQL table. I added random data to the table so I could test using the computer Name as our primary key since each one is unique. I get an error when I try to save data I enter stating key is in use and clearly it is not. (attached image of SQL manager and my ux component) I have worked out deleting a record I am just have trouble with adding a new record as well as allowing the primary key to be the computer name.
Using a 3 panel ux, list control linked to a SQL data base. Panel one is search, 2 is the list view and the 3rd is the editing/detail view
using the predefined buttons on the edit screen for save, reset, record, and sync I was going to remove sync all
    Thank you

any other info needed please let me know

Who knows what you are doing or how you are doing it, please be more specific. Show in detail the steps you have done to submit the record.

as well as allowing the primary key to be the computer name
Something tells me that your first error is here. The primary key is a unique ID for each record in the database, so I have no idea why you would want "the computer name" solely as an identifier of one record. Typically the primary key is auto-increment. It sounds like your saying records entered from each "computer name" would be unique - but each "computer name" will be used to enter many records.

in that case, I would think the database table would look something like this.

      .
      ID Computer_Name Part_Number Employee_ID Date Cost
      1 PC1 123 34234 5/16/2015 1.98
      2 PC2 354 14234 5/18/2015 3.50
      3 PC2 785 14234 5/19/2015 6.50
In this example, the primary key would be ID and it is set to auto-increment. Notice that PC2 has entered two records.
If your primary key were the computer name the new record would fail because it already exists.

SO as I said it sounds to me like your using the computer name as a primary key is a problem here.

NOW, if I am way off and I am completely misreading this - AND you get primary keys and understand fully why your using that as a primary key then please forgive me.
      I hope this helps.

To get better answers, you should first explain what your working with etc.
      Like saying,
"I am building a UX in V12 3.5 and I created a text box control. I want the text box control to have a red border. how do I set that up?"

at this point, anyone using V12 will be able to quickly answer you. If however you simply ask
"How do I make a red border?"

Nobody will be able to answer that, as we have no idea what your trying to do.
I actually learned alot while writing out my own questions, and looking back at some of my earlier posts I can see why I wasn't getting answers at first either, lol.

Anyways, like I said I hope this helps you out and is in no way meant to offend.

Don't give up - you'll get it working!

        Re: saving a NEW RECORD

        Charles,
thank you for the direction given my poor explanation. I key I am using needs to be the computer ID this is a single table application that no one wants to have other interaction with. I looked at the primary key setup and the SQL data base was not set properly the Primary key was set on another field because I originally set the table up to auto increment on an ID field. So your explanation steered me directly to my issue. I thought I had done something with the events in Alpha incorrectly.
