The Alpha Software Forum Participation Guidelines
The Alpha Software Forum is a free forum created for Alpha Software Developer Community to ask for help, exchange ideas, and share solutions. Alpha Software strives to create an environment where all members of the community can feel safe to participate. In order to ensure the Alpha Software Forum is a place where all feel welcome, forum participants are expected to behave as follows:
Be sure all comments and threads you post are respectful. Posts that contain any of the following content will be considered a violation of your agreement as a member of the Alpha Software Forum Community and will be moderated:
If a thread or post is found to contain any of the content outlined above, a moderator may choose to take one of the following actions:
Moderators may also rename posts and threads if they are too generic or do not property reflect the content.
Moderators may move threads if they have been posted in the incorrect forum.
Threads/Posts questioning specific moderator decisions or actions (such as "why was a user banned?") are not allowed and will be removed.
The owners of Alpha Software Corporation (Forum Owner) reserve the right to remove, edit, move, or close any thread for any reason; or ban any forum member without notice, reason, or explanation.
Community members are encouraged to click the "Report Post" icon in the lower left of a given post if they feel the post is in violation of the rules. This will alert the Moderators to take a look.
Alpha Software Corporation may amend the guidelines from time to time and may also vary the procedures it sets out where appropriate in a particular case. Your agreement to comply with the guidelines will be deemed agreement to any changes to it.
Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting
Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.
When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.
The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.
When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.
A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.
If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.
When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.
Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.
- Be professional in your conduct
- Be kind to others
- Be constructive when giving feedback
- Be open to new ideas and suggestions
- Stay on topic
Be sure all comments and threads you post are respectful. Posts that contain any of the following content will be considered a violation of your agreement as a member of the Alpha Software Forum Community and will be moderated:
- Spam.
- Vulgar language.
- Quotes from private conversations without permission, including pricing and other sales related discussions.
- Personal attacks, insults, or subtle put-downs.
- Harassment, bullying, threatening, mocking, shaming, or deriding anyone.
- Sexist, racist, homophobic, transphobic, ableist, or otherwise discriminatory jokes and language.
- Sexually explicit or violent material, links, or language.
- Pirated, hacked, or copyright-infringing material.
- Encouraging of others to engage in the above behaviors.
If a thread or post is found to contain any of the content outlined above, a moderator may choose to take one of the following actions:
- Remove the Post or Thread - the content is removed from the forum.
- Place the User in Moderation - all posts and new threads must be approved by a moderator before they are posted.
- Temporarily Ban the User - user is banned from forum for a period of time.
- Permanently Ban the User - user is permanently banned from the forum.
Moderators may also rename posts and threads if they are too generic or do not property reflect the content.

The Windows Server 2003 resource kit is not required. Older documentation discusses how to use it as a potential solution for running the Alpha Anywhere Classic Application Server as a Windows service. Running as a service however is not supported by Alpha Software, whether using srvany, AlwaysUp, or any other utility. If you have a requirement to run your Application Server as a Windows Service, you should strongly consider using the Alpha Anywhere Application Server for IIS.

Is the Current AA instructions for "Installing the Application Server' out of date?
Or does Microsoft no longer supply / support their 2003 Resource Kit?
We used a third party product https://www.coretechnologies.com/products/AlwaysUp/

I have this question in 3 messages today. As I suggested to you months ago, focus on your product and engage someone who knows what they are doing (a professional) to set up your system, this will cost you, but it will move you forward.

Microsoft is most definitely not supporting nearly 20 year old software. Where are these instructions you speak of? Alpha's installer ought to handle what ever third party software is needed. You can get it here: https://alphaanywheredownloads.s3.am...Downloads.html

Pete,
Much has happened in last few days. I discovered from an early down load of V12 (early 2020) that had a licence for an "Application Server" licence, checked with Steve Wood, who confirmed that we could use it to self-host,
Steve also offered to help me install it and we are in the process of doing that now. As the WhoIs" hosting team are all new to this, it has been quite a struggle, but we are getting there.
Most of our 3yr development was under V11, so most of my apps will run, from the initial localhost testing.
Once we have our 'test market' (for Ballarat only) stuff uploaded, I would love you to have a look there, as this would be much easier than fiddling around now..
Interestingly , we have used Dr Corey Reams (friend of Albert Einstein) 'rating' chart (attached) since 2010 to expand our 'ratings' to over 250 varieties - e.g Granny Smiths and Fuji's 'rate' very differently from BIX / NDI readings..Attached Files

Well, I said I'm happy to take a look at your database and do an overview of your controls as you seemed to have a lot of stuff you may not need, and I'd do it as a free kick to assist you.
..so also hope to find someone to assist in refinements to our 50 odd GRIDS/UX components for Web and Mobiles.
Cheers, Pete

Note sure how to address individually, so will have a go at answers to all the above:- As a BA/ CIO type in large scale ERP systems for past 50 years, I believe that we are ready and secure enough for at least a 'test market' to test our business model.
- Yes, I fully agree we need a programmer to take it to the next level, as our skills are in marketing / selling IT solutions (for past 30 years)
- Have been in contact with Steve Woods (IADN) for many years, who is helping us through this process. Pete Conway, just an hour or so away, is also keen to help.
- Have a good relationship with Richard Rabins as he is a "cricket tragic" . I was a State Rep player. He is being very helpful, but has no say over AWS costs.
- Yes, aware of the hacking issue and came across other ways of addressing this some years ago - an auto re-routing of IP addresses so that a hacker could never get to our IP address.
- I am not aware of Cloudfare, so will investigate
- We have connected our App to AWS through AA Cloud, where we experienced security clashes with our ATG Framework's Security.
- We have connected to other DB servers through AA Cloud, but too slow, as the integration is not as tight as AA cloud and AWS.
- We have connected to those DB servers (Hong Kong) from our development system (Australia) and speeds are acceptable for limited market testing.
- We have an AA Application Server purchased in 2015, which we are about to test for self-hosting.
- Our software (developed over the years, now on Build 5581), runs well enough on the 2015 Build 2263.
- thousands of users
- High activity
- high rate of server call back's, etc.

I understand that being a NFP typically translates to small/tight budget. But I think you're going to have a hard time finding an Alpha developer that will work for well under their typical hourly cost. From what I have read you appear to feel strongly in your product and it's potential. I would respectfully suggest that you (and any of your partners) take on the financial risk of hiring a developer to bring your product to its full potential.
This site may help you find the developer you're looking for: https://www.iadn.com/

I have read all of the documentation here and respectfully suggest that Alpha Professional Services would be the best way forward.

I think the major problem with classic application server is the lack of virtual host support. So it is hard to hide actual IP. But you can solve this running again an other proxy (like IIS)) but you are right things are getting complicated and many can not do this.
But anyway I am interested if somebody has found somewhere a secure server that can not be hacked.
