Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    a5_GetArgumentValue

I am trying to get the value from a control on a UX into a report using an argument and the function a5_GetArgumentValue in a calculated field on the report. I set up the argument definition on the UX as WHATENGINEER and it uses set value at runtime.

I can't get it to work. Does anyone have a working example to show this function?

This could be wrong but calc fields are not the same as arguments.

According to Alpha, this is how you get a value into a report. It is also spelled out in the documentation ... https://documentation.alphasoftware....20Function.xml

I just have had no luck making this work. Hoping somebody has used this method?

I don't use reports but maybe just try WhatEngineer: or WHATENGINER OR WHATENGINER: - Its guessing game as there's no example like most things.

I don't think you use a5_GetArgumentValue in an expression field like that.
If you are opening it using xbasic you feed the argument in a5w_report_saveAs.
If you are opening the report using a javascript action, you feed the argument using the builder.
In either case you define the expression using the "xy" icon at the the top of the report. Then the argument name will appear in the Drag & Drop list of Calculated fields.

I am clearly missing something, because I have exactly the same thing in the report expression builder and it shows up in the calculated fields with the a5_GetArgument_Value expression:

                  Report Expression Builder.jpg

                  Calculated Field.jpg

My argument is defined on the UX that calls the report and gets its value from a field on the UX:

OK, you have the argument defined in the UX. But in order for the expression in the report to be populated with the value, the argument must be passed in via an argument defined in xbasic.
Coincidentally, I am working an xbasic function right now to do exactly that.

                    Code:
                    dim whatEngineer as c = e.datasubmitted .whatEngineer
                    args.set("whatEngineer",whatEngineer)
                    a5w_report_saveAs(reportNameHere,saveAS,filter,order,cover,global_variables(),PrintOptions,args,options)
Or, if you are opening the report using javascript action Open, or Email a Report, Label or Latter Layout, you define the arguments in the builder.

                    Untitled.png

What method are you using to produce the report?

Also, try hard coding the value of the argument: WhatEngineer = "Bob"
If the report shows "Bob", everything is working except that the value of the argument is not being passed in.

I am using action javascript "Run a report that is embedded in a UX component using a custom filter for the report" to run the report. This way I am able to filter the report based on multiple fields on the UX. This all works fine. Just not able to get the value of the field used to filter the report into the report itself.

                      Run Report.jpg

I tried hard coding the default value for the argument in the report datasource definition ... but even that isn't getting into the report.

                      Default Value.jpgDefaulkt Value 2.jpg

Going to see if I can make it work by setting the argument using an ajax callback.

I have never used that particular action. A lot of moving parts.

But you need to hard code "Bob" in the Calculated Values expression in the report itself for testing.

Another suggestion... in the embedded component, fetch the value of the ServicedBy control from the parent UX, and then add an argument to the embedded component.

Okay, I have this working !!!

I created a 'new' argument in the datasource definition of the report and called it argWhatEngineer (instead of WHATENGINEER)
I bound the argument to the {ServicedBy} field in the UX and now it works. Not sure what the deal is with the original argument name .. but at least it works!

Thanks for all your suggestions and sticking with me on this. Much appreciated.

Oh, and back to the original question about a5_GetArgumentValue ... this does indeed work in the calculated field on the report.
