Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    8356: Fatal error running a5_ajax_grid()

I just republished an application which had been running OK (except for the File Download issue) under 8301 (and under 6699 before that) and got the following error when attempting to run a grid:

    Screen Shot 2022-10-12 at 5.40.05 PM.png
Has anyone run into something like this on ANY version (8356 or prior)? Just looking for some information so I can decide whether 8356 is still not for me.

    Thank You.

I am currently on 8245 with no bugs that I see, and I have to say I have a pretty large web application I started building years ago. Could be a bug, I'll be sure to post back once I move to that version!
I do see 2 hot fixes available for that version...https://aadocuments.s3.amazonaws.com...o_present.html

Thanks, Charles, I hadn't even THOUGHT of looking for something like that (just didn't want to install a nightly build). I'll check it out.

Just a followup; indeed one of the hotfixes (a5_grid) did take care of the error. However, it also broke the saveListEdits on my mobile app (error in persistListData). To fix THAT I would need to upgrade to a nightly build (8368) which I don't want to do. The best compromise I've found is the 8301 server with an 8301 mobile app and 8356 Desktop app.

Regardless, thanks again for your help.

It is always nice when I move to the next version and it all just works but I must admit myself and my users all cringe when I update the server software at least for a day or two. The most important thing about the process is I can very quickly and easily switch back to the previously working version. Obviously, we could complain about how an update might break something simple or what we perceive to be simple, but my experience with Alpha Software has been just exemplary. Fixed as fast as possible, with support often into the night because they really care about their product and customers. Nothing is more embarrassing than submitting a bug report and realizing it was a really dumb mistake on my part, but when I have found an issue it was dealt with literally immediately. If you read some of my previous posts, I have made comments about how I am not sure selwyn is human or ever sleeps...the whole team seems to give 110% - well enough brown nosing, I will just say, thanks to them I got a great application that works! In fact I was talking to a secretary for another company who uses my app who told me she was working from home even though she was sick today - because she can work from anywhere, lol - she can't call in sick anymore and she's still getting paid!

I certainly agree about Selwyn seemingly never taking a day (or hour) off.

It is also disappointing when an upgrade breaks something that was working. My feeling is that I have an implicit deal with Alpha: I won't be embarrassed if I submit a bug report that turns out to be a mistake on my part and I won't expect them to be embarrassed if they provide an upgrade that breaks something.

It's like anything else: You can't have it all. It's a tradeoff. Deciding on which software to work with is a compromise, and I've chosen Alpha because it provides me with what I figure is the best combination of features and reliability. And to echo what you (and I above) said about Selwyn, he indeed seems to take the reputation of his software to heart, he acts like (I hope) I would if I owned a software company.
