Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Twilio issues ...

    I use Twilio within Alpha extensively. It has worked beautifully for years. I am now finding that certain phone numbers are not working. Has anyone else had problems with this?

    What do you mean by "certain phone numbers are not working"? Outbound calls? Inbound calls? SMS?

      I use Twilio daily in one of my apps (just SMS). I haven't noticed any issues. I log failed messages so I'd know what Twilio is saying is wrong. Do you log (or know) what the reported failure is?

      EDIT: If you want to private message me one of the number that are failing I'd be happy to send a test SMS to it.

          Hi Mike,

          "I log failed messages so I'd know what Twilio is saying is wrong."

          How do I do that? Do I need to go to twilio to see the logs or is there a way to capture the error within alpha when this fails:

          flag = twilio_send_sms(pResult,to,message,namedResource)

          So, if flag is false, can I capture the twilio error?

            I send Twilio SMS via CURL in an xbasic module and not through Alpha's documented function twilio_send_sms().

            Here is some abbreviated code ...

            Code:
            dim cf_1 as extension::CurlFile
            dim flag_1 as l
            dim response as p
            dim ce as extension::Curl
                ce = extension::Curl.Init()

            dim authToken as c = "MY TOKEN"
            dim acctSID as c = "MY SID"
            dim twilioNumber as c = "SOME PHONE NUMBER"

            ce.setOpt("URL","https://api.twilio.com/2010-04-01/Accounts/" + acctSID + "/Messages.json")
            ce.setOpt("NOPROGRESS",1)
            ce.setOpt("USERPWD",acctSID + ":" + authToken)
            ce.setOpt("POSTFIELDS",posted_fields)
            ce.setOpt("POSTFIELDSIZE_LARGE", len(posted_fields) )
            ce.setOpt("USERAGENT","curl/7.34.0")
            ce.setOpt("MAXREDIRS",50)
            ce.setOpt("CAINFO",a5.Get_Exe_Path()+"\caroot\ca-cert.pem")
            ce.setOpt("CAPATH",a5.Get_Exe_Path()+"\caroot")
            'ce.setOpt("SSH_KNOWNHOSTS","C:\Users\Administrator\AppData\Roaming/_ssh/known_hosts")
            ce.setOpt("CUSTOMREQUEST","POST")
            ce.setOpt("TCP_KEEPALIVE",1)
            ce.SetOpt("FILE",cf_1)

            flag_1 = ce.Exec()

                if flag_1 then
                    'Connected to Twilio successfully

                    dim contents as c = ""
                        contents = cf_1.GetContent()

                    'Parse twilio response
                    response = json_parse(contents)

                    if response.status = "queued" then
                        'SMS message sent successful
                        p.msgStatus = response.status
                        p.msgSID = response.sid
                    else
                        'SMS message NOT sent, get the reason from Twilio
                        p.msgStatus = "Response Status: " + response.status + crlf() + "Message: " + response.message + crlf() + "Code: " + response.code + crlf() + "More Info: " + response.more_info
                    end if

                else
                    'There was a problem connecting to the service
                end if

            ce.close()
            The only I don't check is if a message gets "Queued" but still fails to send. For that I'd have to either check the Twilio account and match the SID or develop another routine to check these.

              Looking over Alpha's documentation for twilio_send_sms() they too are returning Twilio's response. So if you are using this function take a look here: https://documentation.alphasoftware....20function.xml

                Hi Mike,

                Thanks for your input. Unfortunately, when I run the code, pResult is empty no matter whether flag was true or false.

                  *shrug* ... I don't know. I can still run a "bad" number through mine if you want and see what the result is. Up to you.

                      Hi Sarah,

                      Thanks for responding.

                      I am just wondering if pResult should be returning something from Twilio. I would think it should.

                      And how would I inspect what's in pResult? I would think something like:

                      ?pResult

                      but that is returning empty whether twilio send was successful (true) or not (false).

                      Would I need to do something like:

                      ?pResult. i.e. a dot and then something like errors e.g., ?pResult.errors

                      Please advise.

                        Gray: I received your message but couldn't respond for some reason. Alpha forum said I didn't have permission...

                        Both numbers you gave me were "queued"...this means Twilio received the request and will send the SMS. I have a test component for you. I'll post it here in a few moments.

                          Attached to this post is a Twilio test component. You must provide your own Twilio number, account SID, and auth. token. They get hard coded in the xbasic function. Included in the function is the ability to examine twilio's response.

                              I use twilio myself, I am on 8245-5650 and haven't seen any issues. Have you checked the twilio logs? They can also tell you a little bit about what errors are on their end.
