Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Email requires "STARTTLS"

I was happily using gmail to send alerts from my various webpages - until gmail decided it needed the second verification etc. So I thought I'd try using my GoDaddy O365 Outlook account. When setting up the new profile in the Alpha email settings and running the test, I get the following error message:

    ---
Connect to Outgoing (SMTP) Server succeeded.
    ---
Login to Outgoing (SMTP) Server succeeded.
    ---
    Test e-mail send failed:
451 5.7.3 STARTTLS is required to send mail [LO4P265CA0158.GBRP265.PROD.OUTLOOK.COM]

Can you please advise me how to deal with the STARTTLS request? I didn't see it as an option in the Alpha email settings

Larry, if you're storing email settings in Alpha you can update the registry to use STARTTLS...

    Set
    Code:
    Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Alpha Software\Alpha Anywhere 12.0\init\email\profiles\profile1\SMTPSecureConnectionType
as required. This will show in the Aplha email settings as white space.

Thank you for the advice and information. Please bear with me as I am no expert... I have checked my directory and that code is already there. Under the 'Data' heading it says "No" - not sure if that is relevant. But assuming that the code is OK in my registry, what do you mean by "white space", i.e. where should I be looking? I am trying to set up the email in View/Settings/Email.

Having said all of that, I've just noticed the comment in the dialogue box which says "Using gmail", so I will try those Port settings and see how I get on.

I shall report back, but thank you in the meantime

Regretfully I still can't get on with the gmail, so I'm back to using Outlook. As I mentioned above, can you please point me in the direction of the "white space"

Larry, in my (oldish) version of AA view->settings->email takes me to a tabbed form. You need to select the desired profile (usually 'default') then the sending tab. This will contain 'no', 'SSL' or 'TLS' - there's no option to choose 'STARTTLS'.

Run regedit.exe and naivigate to the path in post Forum and set 'SMTPSecureConnectionType' to 'STARTTLS' close regedit and return to AA.

If you close/reopen email settings the value should now be blanked as in the attachment. and STARTTLS will be used.

You may also want to consider sending with the email_send_noprofile() function. Documentation is here.

Tacking on to this thread because I've run into the same problem: My Office365 SMTP server requires me to use STARTLS and that is not one of the options in the dropdown in the email section of Properties. I've looked at Post Forum and fired up Regedit but can't find the indicated path (there is no "init...." branch under "Alpha Anywhere 12.0"). I'm using 8417 under Windows 10. I realize I could code this all manually but "STARTTLS" isn't in the dropdown in the Action Javascript "Email a report...." dialog either and it would help to be able to use it.

Which version does this registry path apply to and any idea where it might exist in 8417?

              I would appreciate any ideas.

"TLS" is the setting value to use when you want to enable STARTTLS. Many Office 365 accounts have additional security applied though that further prevents the use of email from within Alpha Anywhere so you may still be unable to use it.

Thank you, Lenny, so I just want to double-check: You're saying that it's possible, unless I can get the O365 security setting tuned down, that I may be unable to use that SMTP server to send email from AA (even with something like EMAIL_SMTP_SEND())? I would have to resort to a different language (e.g. C#.NET) altogether?

For what it's worth, I am currently using office365 with email_smtp_send.
I believe I was grandfathered in , but I would certainly turn to microsoft (they're usually more than friendly to talk with),
about the settings required to send email programatically or even from your favorite MFP.

An easy way to send emails is to use Power Automate. So you send email to your Microsoft365 outlook account and then you use code in subject line to trigger events using Office365 Outlook connector and so in your case your code will activate flow to send email from your account.

Thanks for the two additional posts, madtowng and kkfin. I tried just selecting "TLS" and it worked. Prior to this I didn't choose any of the three security options in the dropdown and just typed in "STARTTLS". So apparently that never really worked as intended; regardless, right now I can send with plain TLS. My concern is that the app is for a client and it may not work for them, although I can always tell them to contact Microsoft or their app manager.
