Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

YIKES! Why Is My Database So Big

So, I backed up my SQL Server database today and it took a while .. I've noticed this was taking longer and longer as time went by. I got me wondering why?

I ran a disk space report on the server instance tables and found the the audit table is consuming 158MB of data. This is the built in Alpha auditing feature and I never thought much about it before but my audit table now has over 35,000 records (INSERTS, UPDATES, & DELETES).

I am curious who else is using the audit table? And whether this needs purging by saving the data, dropping the table, then creating it again and starting over? Thoughts anyone?

If you only have 35k records, you're doing good.
No need to drop the table, just truncate it after you backup the data.

I use it too, it has been helpful when a user calls to tell me that they are missing data only to find out they deleted it and I can tell them exactly when and then they magically remember doing it, lol so Like anything its really about what you wanna keep around....or need to

Charles, how many users do you have and how large is your audit table?

Just to put this in perspective, this image is from one of my log tables.

Maybe I am reading more into this than is necessary Gregg. Clearly, your log table is very large.

I may still export my audit and login activity tables to Excel then truncate the tables at the beginning of each year ... or maybe I'll just leave them alone. I know SQL can handle millions of records.
Because I back up my database frequently, it just seemed to be taking much longer and got me wondering where the bottleneck lies.

Could be worse....my audit table has over 215,000 records and over 542 MBs.

We have over 4,000 registered users so it is not surprising it is that large. It definitely takes forever to backup but having a complete audit history is important to us, so it is worth it.

Does anyone use the Offline Data Synchronization Log Table to avoid inserting duplicates into your database? It seems lately that this SQL audit info has been added to this table even though I am not using any kind of auditing features in Alpha. Even though I only keep a couple of days of data in this table, it has grown to over 1 GB in size (over 80,000 records). I wonder if there a change in Alpha that added this audit data to the info field of the Offline Data Synchronization Log Table.
