Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Display Multiple Records on a UX

    Hi All...

Is a repeating section the only way to display multiple records for a related record on a UX? A list won't work in this scenario and I don't really want to use a Grid.

    Insured (Parent)
    - Policy 1 (Child)
    - Policy 2 (Child)
    - etc......

    Thanks
    Joe

Viewboxes are the way to go, modern and lightweight especially if you only want to display the data

I have to agree with Lance.
We all know that for ease of use, the grid wins hands down, but for anything else
the viewbox is a much better option.

I'm still having trouble setting up group breaks, but certainly searching a viewbox
and then displaying a subset of that viewbox is all very doable.

I haven't used any Viewbox controls yet....

Is the data in a Viewbox editable? The word "view" makes it sound like it is to display the data.

Yes Joe you are correct, as a basic item the viewbox just displays data, which was your initial question. However like any HTML it can be manipulated to be editable

yes, but with a caveat or 2.
Presuming you are going to put the viebox in a panelcard, the ability to modify a control
changes based on whether or not pinch to zoom is selected.

Lance, Pete Conway , and Lee Vasic know the ins and outs far better than I do.

You have the option of using editor sets.

Thanks everyone. I honestly have no idea what I'm putting it in. I just started watching the videos on Alpha's YouTube channel. I have not used this feature before. Some of the videos I'm finding don't apply as the feature is totally different than when they were made. Bit of a up hill battle until I get my mind wrapped around it.

It's nearly 10pm here and the wine is flowing well, for a quick look at parent child possibilities have a look at my quick example in post nine on this post https://forum.alphasoftware.com/foru...t-almost-works

With this you can set up events that work when you tap on a row, then bring up an edit form so that you can alter any fields and save them

Joe - once you display it then what? .. what are you trying to do?

Currently the old design opens a grid in a TabbedUI but the grid is starting to show its limitations by comparison to the UX. The repeating section could work but for some reason it is only displaying one related record when open it on a new tab.

Parent UX (Transaction) - this UX searches for the Insured records and contains a button to open a grid(currently) called (Limits) which displays the related records. End users can update policy information and create new policy records (changes to coverage, renewals, etc).

We now have a new type of coverage that we can write that requires a UI change and a lot of new fields. This is where my layout challenges are coming with the grid. I built the layout I'd like as a UX but the UX only displays one record at a time. Users can "Next" through the different years but visually doesn't tell the story of what an Insured has purchased over the years.

That was why I was asking if the repeating section was the only way to provide "grid like" functionality with the benefits of the UX. I heard a lot about viewboxes but have no experience with them.

I started playing with the repeating section but must have something wrong in what I did as it only displays the one related record and blank new records below. For example. If we wrote a policy for multiple years when I click the button to open the UX on a new tab it only shows one policy year. It should show multiple as we have multiple related records. The filter on the UX it loads is set "where transact_arg = transact_id"

I hope I'm being clear here....thank you for any input.

                    Joe
