Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Viewboxes and Form Views

Here I go again, apparently trying to do something that wasn't meant to be done.
The first image shows a viewbox followed by a form view.
Until, my viewbox displays have been designed for a few columns from multiple rows of data,
but I want the formview to display multiple columns from 1 row of data, showing more than one
    column on each row.
First question is how do I size each column in the formview, and then how do I configure
    the rows?
Second question is how can I hide the formview until a row in the viewbox has been clicked ?

The final question (for now) would be is there a way to get the editor to display directly under the control being edited ?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Gregg,

Could you just use another viewbox with editable fields instead of the formview?

      Hey Lance,

      Thank you for responding.
I think only my ignorance prevents me doing that.
If I keep trying, I just might find the way to skin a

I know this is going to sound rudimentary but - it's just html with place holders - you can use the freeform editor to create any layout you want. The genie just makes it easy to get an idea of what is possible. As far as displaying the editor relative to the control you can put the editor in a window and have it pop-up relative to the control. https://www.youtube.com/@Alpha-Software/search?query=formview
        Lots of good stuf
f there - related to your questions and better said than I could!

They are old controls now and so heavy, the vb opens a whole new world to the developer.

Here is a quick example of what's possible the dropdowns are all dynamic from the database and it all using CSS3 in display and edits. my experience is - for every input control you remove you reduce the bulk of the UX by 250 lines of heavy generic code (100 controls 25000 lines GONE.) - so I don't use them at all now. Using the viewbox gives your UX 1:250 ratio in savings. It's awesome.

              Hi Charles,
One of the benefits of using AS is that I didn't need to deal with pesky html.
Xbasic, SQL, and a minimal amount of javascript worked well for me.
Grids were a quick easy way to display data, and it was shown that grids can be quite powerful
Then along came the list control. I determined they were more work than grids, and did not
offer the ability to load data only when a query was submitted.
Then came viewboxes, and I avoided them for a long time.
One needed to deal with css and javascript, as well as the deeper side of html (more than "hello world").

Thanks to Lance Gurd and Pete Conway, I have been learning.
My javascript skills have advanced tremendously, html and css have advanced moderately.

As I'm sure you've seen from various posts, the viewbox has quite the learning curve.
I started simple with my video finder page. It's gone through several updates, and does a great
job of finding videos based only on the search criteria provided. Even this project, the current iteration
has , at least in my opinion, advanced greatly, not only in the display, but also in the functionality.
For a small area (the formview is below the primary viewbox) there is a lot of html that I still don't
              completely understand.

Asking questions is how I learn. Thankfully, many people on this forum are gracious enough to take
              the time to answer questions.

              Code:
              <div>
              <div>
              <div id="{dialog.componentName}.{form.Id:CustomerID}" {form.binding:CustomerID} class="formView {form.class:CustomerID}" style="box-sizing: border-box; -moz-box-sizing: border-box; -ms-box-sizing: border-box; -webkit-box-sizing: border-box; width: 100px; display:inline-block; ;padding-right: 4px;" ><div class="[theme:ux.base.labelClassName|class.dialogFieldLabel]" style="font-size: 75%">Customerid</div> <div class="[theme:edit.base.className|class.dialogInput]" style="border: 1px solid black;"><span id="{dialog.componentName}.{form.displayId:CUSTOMERID}">{CustomerID}&nbsp;</span></div> {form.itemError:CustomerID}</div>
              <br>
              <div id="{dialog.componentName}.{form.Id:companyname}" {form.binding:companyname} class="formView {form.class:companyname}" style="box-sizing: border-box; -moz-box-sizing: border-box; -ms-box-sizing: border-box; -webkit-box-sizing: border-box; width: 3in; display:inline-block; ;padding-right: 4px;" ><div class="[theme:ux.base.labelClassName|class.dialogFieldLabel]" style="font-size: 75%">Company Name</div> <div class="[theme:edit.base.className|class.dialogInput]" style="border: 1px solid gold;><span id="{dialog.componentName}.{form.displayId:companyname}">{companyname}&nbsp;</span></div> {form.itemError:companyname}</div>

It took me forever to get the right combination to serve this up live.
Anyone can "kick the tires" of what I've done so far at UX (youshould-seethis.com).

With the except of one project, my stuff avoids list controls like checking accounts with monthly maintenance fees.
This project has 1 viewbox, 1 formview based on static json, an editor set, and the 5 standard controls
                within the editor set.

This might sound crazy, but does anyone know where the formview control buries the onClick event?
ie: I know some event is triggered when someone clicks on the companyName control, but I can't find the event.

I need this piece of information to improve the functionality.

if your using the standard row control in the viewbox I believe it adds an item (in the items tab) called "row" - that is where the on-click event is. In the formview, what do you mean click on? Is there an editor? theres is an onclick event there...

                      Hi Charles,

                      Thanks for the response.
Working with https://z5.youshould-seethis.com/fvs...iewsandbox.a5w as the example, after clicking on
one of the viewbox rows, the data in the gold-bordered formview controls become editable.
I figured out that the onClick event is buried in the editor's Set value in editor property.
That leaves me needing to know how to get the offset values for the formview control.

                              Talk about a learning experience.
I thought the viewbox would be the steepest learning curve from Alpha Software, until I tackled thils
                              "simple" Form View.

A special thank you to Keith (K2kcc) for the hours spent with me working on the html/javascript needed to
                              accomplish my goals.

My goal was to create a UX with a form view based on a viewbox instead of a list control
I also wanted to let the user edit the data without the click & seek method typically associated with
the Form View control. As usual, this is meant to be more functional than pretty.

The project can be tested HERE.
Right now there are 3 gold bordered controls that can edited.
All changes are temporary for now,

For those that prefer video, understand I am not much for public speaking, but here is a brief video demonstration.https://www.screencast.com/t/jdYzx5SQUEQg

CharlesParker It's difficult to explain what I was trying to accomplish, but I think the mostly finished
project will demonstrate what I was looking for.
