Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Grid Fields required and syntax formatting

    Went through the Flying Start Genie using the Northwind data tables. Would like to know how to I change a field in one of the grids to be required when entering a new record.

    Also, I would like to add the function when adding items that the text can be formatted into upper case. Example, when entering a state if the user enters the state ca it would be saved as CA.

    look at the javascript actions on the right for each field if you want the rules enforced at time of entry/change.
    If you're just learning grids now, I would suggest starting with viewboxes to avoid a 2nd learning curve.

          Thanks for the input. This is just a test project as I learn how to use the application so not necessarily creating a product to go into production. Would you be able to assist me with how to change the data in the field to uppercase when sending it to the database?

            Hi Randy,
            Put the code shown below in the onChange event. Choose text (the middle top radio button).
            Change <fieldName> to the name of the field you want to convert to caps.

            Code:
            var rowNum = {grid.Object}.getSelectedRow();
            var colData = {grid.Object}.getValue('G','<fieldName>',rowNum);
            {grid.Object}.setValue('G','<fieldName>',rowNum,colData.toUpperCase());

                      Given that I am using the Northwind database from the tutorial I did not realize the rule that existed, however, when I entered a new record the company name remained in lowercase.

                        I didn't know about that restraint until you showed the error message.
                        I just took the time to read the message (this one made sense to me).

                        I can't explain your most recent issue without seeing everything your grid is doing.

                          I went through a tutorial " Getting Started With Alpha Anywhere - Build Your First Web App "

                          It basically goes through how to use the "Flying Start Genie" process and uses the Northwind database.

                          Link to the tutorial: https://documentation.alphasoftware....0App/index.xml

                          What I want to do is for specific fields I would like to edit the data that would be sent to the table. Example if the user enters the customer name, Ben, it would be saved as, BEN, into the table.

                          Here is an image of how the web app looks:

                            was able to figure out how to change the values in the grid database. Thank you for trying to help.

                            Add this list to both the CanUpdateRecord and CanInsertRecord events: DataSubmitted.COMPANYNAME = upper(DataSubmitted.COMPANYNAME)

                              I'm sure you can tell by now there are several ways to skin a cat.
                              I gave you the javascript (clientside) method, you obviously found xbasic(serverside), and there's still letting sql (I'm guessing you're using sql) handle.
                              I still think you'd be better off learning viewboxes or even list controls at the very start (makes the learning curve easier to deal with).
