Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Filter grid by Dropdown then run report

Grid based on DBF table. I want to run a report by passing 3 arguments to the report based on current grid search criteria. I works great unless I don't select a street name (see image). Then, a NULL value is passed to the report which gets no "Streets" in the report. How can I get the first entry in the dropdown to show "all" meaning run report for all currently selected streets within the cascading filter?

when you defining the dropdown, a popup comes up right? look half the way down in that, there will be a prompt
    additional choice(pre) something similar.
    there you add
    <select all streets>|""
the character after the select all street is the pipe character on top of the back slash "\".
that will give you the word select all street and, i think, empty string will give all the streets. you have to test and see how it goes then play with it.

Gandhi, I don't know if "" works as a wild card to select all, All streets|% should definitely work though.

In the "Pre" filter criteria, I took Gandhi's advice and tried All_streets|'' and All_streets|.t. I still get no selections and I still get a blank line at the top (now second entry), of the dropdown list. I can live with the blank entry.

I tried this but still no selections. I did also change to a Wildcard (4) to see if that made a difference - no go.

I just did a quick test on a grid - not on a report filter - the pre selection does give the way it is supposed to work and empty string did give me the entire list.
if you could post your definition that will be helpful to identify the problem.

take a look at this screencast,
                    http://screencast.com/t/98EqT3o9BL
again I want to tell you this is in a grid not a filter for a report. just to show the functionality.
                    hope this helps.
if not at least I tried.
                    good luck

Re: Filter grid by Dropdown then run report

Gandhi - Thanks you for the screencast. The information you gave me did not fix the problem but it caused me to look at how I set up the cascading filters as I was filtering on a simple list and then a different table for the last two. The Combined_address field that is my last filter, actually has blank addresses due to the data source. So, when asking for all|"" it does exactly what I ask it. Gives me the blanks. While I have not solved the problem, this hunt has taught me a lot about cascading filters. I will go back to square one and see if I can contrive a way to get around the blank records. Thanks again. - Erich

Re: Filter grid by Dropdown then run report

If you did not solve or unable to solve because of the inconsistencies in the source data then you can easily make lt work by using the same table for filtering.
For example if you are using customer table for grid/report then use the customer table as the source for cascading filter-
This will work if you had followed what Al has said in his signature to have a denormaized table with human readable data.
