Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Report error message

I am calling a report from an ActionJavaScript on a ActionButton.
The report runs in Working View without a problem and runs standalone without a problem BUT
when I run the report in Live View to throw an error??

Report did not print. Error reported was:
Report Server: Layout name: VW_Report_byGroup@C:\AlphaAnywhere Projects\SCWPosse\scwposse.alb Layout type: report at line: 523

Is anyone familiar with this error or what might be causing this?

    Re: Report error message

So, after working fine for all of 2015, my project returns the above error for every report I've tried so far. There are lots more to follow too. One error report instructed me to save the 'Layout report version.' This fixed it, but most reports are Layout reports anyway - so this error report doesn't apply.

I'm calling reports from directly within the TabbedUI, and from within grid components. The problem does not seem to occur with UX components (so far!).

I'm using the latest version of V12, and have been for months.

What has suddenly happened? Did you get to the bottom of this?

      Re: Report error message

A report error that includes a reference to a file with the extension .alb indicates you are using a workspace report. If you are getting this when published, make sure you have published the workspace library.

If the error includes the text "report server", that indicates it was run from a report server spawned by an application server, which could be either the development server or a remote server. In that case, first verify the report previews in the workspace.

If using the last release build (2999), that build includes a method to capture report errors when run on an application server. If the regular logging is turned on (access and error logs), a report log is also created in the same folder. This is only created by the report server, so if it is off, the log is not created. This just shows start and finish times, and if an error was reported.

If the xbasic error log is on (it should always be on) a failed report on the report server will generate a special dump file in the same folder. This has a .dmp file extension. These files can be sent to Alpha Software using the bug reporting process as the file is encrypted. We can open the file and determine if any problem is revealed. Any report error messages are also written to the xbasic error log

The latest pre-releases use a new method to generate the report data if you are using SQL based reports. See the release notes for pre-release and search for "UTF8 - SQL Data". This explains the new process and shows how to turn it off if you have a problem.

If the problem remains after these suggestions, please send a bug report with a working example of the problem report with enough data to test it.

        Re: Report error message

My suspension is, you just upgraded to windows 10. There is an incompatibility between windows 10 and the Alpha report server. I had a discussion in Boston with the Alpha tech regarding this very issue. They said they were aware and working on a fix.

            Jerry
This also just came up on a runtime version I have been using for years. The report will preview but when I click to either email or save it I get this. "Layout name: AGI Quote FormLayout type; report." It work find on the regular developer version. I have copied the entire Database and replaced it but it still does it on the new system. It is not including any of the indicators you mention in your post.

            Thanks
            Steve
