Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

clicking on a report field open a subreport

    Hello,
Is there a way, where I display a report and when the user click on a row, then details for the select reports opens, it might be on a new report (best) or the same report colapsed and expanded.

    Thank you for any help

    Hi Paul,

Time to think outside the box.

A report, at least a clickable report, would just be another representation of data in a list or even better a viewbox form. With either of these you can have onclick events on rows to view other data. To me a report is something that can be universally viewed (PDF or spreadsheet format) or printed out and therefore not designed to be clicked.

I use viewboxes a lot where the rows of data are clickable to expand and show child records. There is an example of how to do this, on the home tab of the viewbox builder click the load sample viewbox link and then choose the example that starts with Advanced. Go to the layout tab and edit the layout as instructed and you will get a great looking viewbox that does what you are after. To simulate with your own data you need a nested SQL query

I guess I am too lazy to make both a report that can be printed/extracted to pdf and a viewbox or list to display data with clickable features.
I still didn't move forward with viewboxes, each time I try I find it complex and don't have time to dig into it :)
I was hoping for some magic in the reporting engine of AA.

      Thank you for your reply,

        Hi again Paul,

It really is worth trying that example viewbox I said, not only does it show you how to make good looking viewboxes that have clickable areas to get to child data but also has a button to produce a pdf 'report' via xbasic code.

But if you want me to help you with any viewbox stuff just ask.

            Hi Lance,

You have any straightforward viewboxes you have done say based on the northwinds customers table or similar?

I am in the same camp as Paul and really need to crack that nut on viewboxes. I started a viewbox using alpha’s wizard functions on the layout, but found it was really lacking solid documentation and I couldn’t get groups to work without moving to custom css. Then put it down and went back to optimizing a list lol.

Here you go Wayne, and for you Paul, Northwind_Orders_viewbox.a5wcmp

This took 2 minutes to construct because I used the example I suggest above. All you need to do is changer it from static JSON to a database query and the nested query is there, just make sure it points to your instance of northwinds. Then cut the xbasic between the <pre></pre> tags and paste it in the xbasic functions area. Then remove the first <div> with the information and the <pre> tags and its done.

                Thanks a lot lance,
I will definitely start using the viewbox.
I think my main mistake is that I started the view from scratch, then designing the view was tedious (I am not that good in css)
                Have a nice weekend,

You need to un-learn the past and learn again - and find there is almost nothing to know. Video and VBControlUX (attached)

                    Hi Pete,
I think I need ages to do screens like that.
Thank you very much for the example, I will definitely look deeply into it.

Lance- thanks a bunch for taking the time. One of the great things about this community. Appreciated.

Pete - the master! Love it. Thanks for the encouraging video. Time to take the plunge and tear it apart and learn. I for one will upvote a few how to videos. Don’t want to interfere with your retirement… you’ve given a lot to this community over the years… if you feel compelled to offer guidance, I for one think it would would be appreciated.

                      Kind Regards,

                      Wayne
