Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Upload folder and subfolders containg pdf's to server

    I have a folder structure:

    Records
    |--Person1
    --- a.pdf
    --- b.pdf
    |--Person2
    --- c.pdf
    etc.

I am trying to figure out code in an a5w page to upload the entire folder structure and the pdf's to the server, maintaining the exact folder structure on the server.

Does anyone know how to do this?

    How about : "c:\data\records\" + userID + "\" + filename

It supplies the location for the uploaded file based on my understanding of the criteria you provided once the \s are handled properly.
The image below shows 2 options, either using \\ or chr(92).

Now that I reread your initial post, is your goal to basically copy the records folder and all it's contents to a different server ?
If that's the goal, I would use Remote Desktop Protocol and copy/paste. There are other methods, but I don't know your situation.

Thinking about it, I am sure the server side (xbasic) could be done using one or a combination of file methods.

The JavaScript handoff to xbasic would be where the issue is. Ie storing the folder\subfolder of where each file came from in say an e object for use in xbasic. JavaScript (as far as I know) only provides meta data about the file… name, type and size and does not allow for user privacy and security reasons seeing where it came from.

You can however do large file transfers of lots of files with the drag and drop uploader. I’ve tested it with a silly number of files for fun and not choked it yet. Depending on where you are in my app, I upload the files to different folders on one of my servers. I guess you could use xbasic easy enough to create the folders based on a record you are on as well.. ie employee name.

If this is for admin level purposes and not production use stuff , I would employ a different tool to get the job done. You could still theoretically use the web page to invoke the action on the server if it’s worth it to you. For example, I got tired of making full sql backups to bring live data over to my development server. I use a stored procedure in SQL and call it from a button on a utility web page. It executes the action and then I write the info back to a backups table shown below the button about the backup. Then stored procedure to restore. But again, this is all happening on the server.

orrrr Gregg and I have completely misunderstood what you are trying to do, but at least we’re trying to be helpful :)

Thanks to both of you. Here is more detail: I want to create a button, visible to a customer, that one click will copy the entire folder and its subfolders with approx 8 to 12 pdfs in each subfolder to my server. They may need to do this daily or even once or twice in a day. I believe that this can be done via sftp but I am not well versed in its use. I thought about just doing this with dropbox or something similar but I would rather automate the process and make it very simple for the customer to use. Each pdf name is coded to identify the folder that it is in, so it could work to just upload all the files regardless of subfolder and then I can handle moving them to correct subfolders with Xbasic once they are uploaded.

You can use AA to zip/unzip the folder of pdfs, and use file download to get it to your customer. You should probably just send the files your customer is entitled to unless you know for certain that they will not attempt to look at the other files
