Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    I have seen this before but with the alpha knowledge became rusty, it is now hard, I am now relying on video tutorials. how to filter a dropdown control based on another dropdown or combo box , for example populate a combobox with Countries, then another combobox below will filter cities based on the country selected on the previous comboxbox , Thanks in advance for answering this beginner question.

    what component are you using? How important is speed? How many rows are in your main table?

      Just a few records maybe 30. I will be using the UX Component for this. I think I have seen some old ways to do this , did alpha upgrade this for the past 5 years ?

        Alpha hasn't, but I've learned a few things during that time.
        Keep in mind that I far more concerned about functionality than appearance, although I do have some expectations for appearance.

        If I have less than 300 rows of data to worry about, I'm likely to load the data into a state variable (JSON array of objects).
        I can then use the on keyup event to filter through the state variable, and use the chose value to filter the choices for the next control.

        This did a few things for me, including getting rid of the useless arrow image, and speeding up the choice selections.

          Use the Dynamic Lookup feature.
          I use this often, and if you need a hand, I can show you over Zoom/Skype very quickly.

            Thanks Russel. Do you have a sample code or demo on how to filter a list control based on the logged in user ?

              This is the easiest way add these two functions to your xbasic functions scripts. You can use this format to access anything in the Context. Security functions.
              Examples are using UX-wide state variables - you need to get used to using them, if you want to develop independently.

              One a state variable is set you can use it client and servers side (server/javascript)

              xbasic reverence or set a state variable.
              e._state.currentUser = '123'

              Javascript
              var vCurrentUser = {dialog.object}.stateInfo['CurrentUser']} after the function has been run.

              function currentUser as c (e as p)
              e._state.currentUser = Context.Security.CurrentUser()
              if context.security.callresult.success = .f. then
              dim errortext as c
              errortext = context.security.callresult.text
              addUser = "var ele = $('errors'); if(ele) ele.style.display = '';ele.innerHTML = '" + js_escape(errortext) + "';"
              else
              js = "alert('currentUser'); "'addUser = "var ele = $('errors'); if(ele) ele.style.display = 'none';"
              end if
              end function

              function isActive as c (e as p)
              e._state.isActive = Context.Security.IsActive()
              if context.security.callresult.success = .f. then
              dim errortext as c
              errortext = context.security.callresult.text
              addUser = "var ele = $('errors'); if(ele) ele.style.display = '';ele.innerHTML = '" + js_escape(errortext) + "';"
              else
              js = "isActive'); "'addUser = "var ele = $('errors'); if(ele) ele.style.display = 'none';"
              end if
              end function

                I have a busy morning, but I threw something together real quick for you.

                NOTES:
                -Set Session Variables to ALL CAPS everywhere you call them.
                -Server Side events let you test, but make sure you take them out, or code around them before you publish live.
                The current user is dependent on using an extended user table (I recommend using it as well.)
                -You can also publish session variables to be able to use them in JavaScript, and it makes life much easier.
