Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Suppress Dirty Detail View Warning on List Control

    I have a list control with a detail view.

    What I am looking to do is allow users to make changes to the detail view, in this case a text areas. If they then navigate away from that record, without pressing the save button, I want the list control to discard any changes without displaying a warning.

    My reasoning is that on my form, my users often want to copy information from one of the text areas, but sometimes make small unintentional changes while selecting the information causing the row to show as dirty. Unless they explicitly save the record I don't want any changes to be saved.

    I turned off the Auto-Commit on record change, but every time the row is dirty and the user navigates away it displays a warning.

    There has to be a way around this.

    Anyone else run into this issue before?

    My guess is you have the option to not annoy the user to discard any changes made to that control.

      That would be my guess as well... But after searching the documentation and forums, and trying to figure it our myself with no success I figured I'd make a post and see if anyone knew how to do it.

            Let’s try it this way. What code do you have if the user decides to cancel the update?

              Right now, I put a reset record button on the form which they have to click if they get the dirty record popup as I hadn't come up with a way to code it.

              The reset button's code is:
              var lObj = {dialog.object}.getControl('LIST_CONTROL_NAME');
              lObj.resetForm({prompt: False});

              I played around with a similar code (below) on the onBeforeSelect and it seemed to do the trick.

              var listObj = {dialog.object}.getControl("LIST1");

              if (listObj) {
              var opts= {};
              opts.prompt = false;

              listObj.resetForm(opts);
              }

              Thanks for your help

                  How does the user navigate away that causes the warning message? Are they trying to go to another screen/panel and how do they do that?
                  Ultimately, what are they clicking on that causes the warning?

                    I put this code in the onBeforeSelect event

                    Code:
                    var listObj = {dialog.object}.getControl("LIST1");

                    if (listObj) {
                    var opts= {};
                    opts.prompt = false;

                    listObj.resetForm(opts);
                    }
                    That way when the user click another item in the list control, which then would change all of the detail view fields, the currently viewed record is reset to it's previous state.
                    If you had wanted to save any changes made, you would have hit the save button after you make your changes.

                    ----------
                    Russell,

                    When you have a detail view off of a list control, the mapped fields update when you select a records. If you have an editable control, and auto-commit changes is set to false, then you will get a popup message alerting the user that you need to either save or discard the changes to the record before navigating off the record. I was having an issue where users were copying the date from a mapped text area control and making unintended changes. They then were getting annoyed with the constant warnings when they wanted changes to be auto discarded unless they explicitly saved them.

                      Sounds good.

                      I had a project where users would get the same warning, but instead of clicking on another list item, they would be clicking to go to another UX after messing with the fields, and would then get the alert that I had to code around.

                        so, my question is did the code shown in post #10 resolve your issue?

                          Yes.

                          The code from #10 in the onBeforeSelect event of the list control successfully discards any unsaved changes and allows the user to navigate to a different record without a warning.
