Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Automating email function with Mandrill

I feel like there should be a way to do this, but can't quite figure it out. I have a grid with multiple employees listed. I want to be able to place a button at the top or bottom of the grid that will basically go to the first record, read the employee #, and email them a filtered schedule report based on their employee ID using Mandrill. I have done this before just using our exchange server settings, but can't figure out how to do this with Mandrill. Any help would be appreciated.

David, I think this is the basics of what you're after. In Alpha go to Help, Video Finder, and look for UXG_12--7. This is a video on Emailing a Report using Mandrill. It's quite wonderful that Alpha has thought to give us details on a lot of this stuff.

      Davidk,

I agree this is a great video and I followed this video to be able to send a single report from a UX component. However, what I'm trying to do is automate sending many reports at once. For example, if I had 1000 customers that I wanted to send their specific invoice to. I was thinking that this would probably be best accomplished in a grid and have a button at the top or bottom of the grid that looped through code that would start at the 1st record in the grid, send the email with the report attached and then move to the next item in the grid and do the same all the way through the grid. I've done something similar in the past using just our exchange account, but the only way I could seem to make that work was to first store all the reports in a directory and have each record reference where the pdf file was stored and then send it. I was trying to eliminate this step by using Mandrill and creating the report in binary data, but not quite sure how to accomplish all this. If you have any thoughts, please let me know.

      Thanks!

Ok... didn't know you wanted to send 1,000 emails with reports. I would hand all this work off to the server. If you look at it one way... your grid is really just a nice visual for a user. You, and emails, and reports... don't need the grid and I don't think you'd want to send 1,000 ajax callbacks which is what would happen if you looped through the grid. The nice thing about Mandrill is that you can send customized emails to 1,000 recipients with one call. However, I believe that Mandrill doesn't support sending an attachment per recipient... just attachments per call. You may want to confirm this.

So... since you know the criteria your grid is based on, perform an ajax callback and use your criteria to get your data... your 1,000 records. Now that you've got your data, loop through, create the report and email. Seems a shame to send 1,000 emails... but I'm not sure what else you can do since you want to attach a PDF.

How involved is the report? Could it be created inline as HTML and included in the body of the email? That way you could make 1 call to Mandrill and include what you need for 1,000 recipients. That'd be cool.

The report is pretty involved. I'll look into creating it in HTML and see if that will work. Thanks for your help!
