Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Re: Scheduled task failing

I moved it to its own page in its own instance of a Chrome browser, and it's been just fine for 30 hours now, runs correctly every time.

I've learned a whole lot with this, as this hourly run takes 2-3 minutes of Xbasic processing each time, and this is just too much to be putting on a web server. Next step will be to move it to another location, either another web server just for this (and my work queue processor as well and maybe more later...) or, it's been suggested to me a desktop/runtime implementation is even better as it matters a whole lot less there about how long the Xbasic execution takes.

I find it interesting that past Alpha builds supported your methods without a problem but the latest, albeit pre-release, build doesn't. Maybe it's a bug that was introduced, by Alpha, unknowingly.

        Re: Scheduled task failing

Well, I'm on a pre-release in a production environment - I want to emphasize that as you note Mike. And I have been "sharing" my experience with Alpha. It's fair to say that I have found room to tighten up some of my practices. But yes, that's been my point to Alpha; that I didn't have these issues before. Alpha Software has been very responsive. I could just try moving to a later pre-release but somewhere in here I have to find stability and be building new stuff. So for now I'm about settled in my current spot, users seem to be getting a decent experience, etc.

          Re: Scheduled task failing

I suggest slowly moving the process to less Xbasic and more SQL where possible.

You said that would take quite a bit of work, but if you even managed to drop the process from 2-3 minutes to 1-2 minutes it might be worth the effort.

The other thing that happens as time goes by (aside from upgrades) is that the database gets bigger and some processes may start to take longer as a result.

So it could be that even though it worked in the past it could be having issues now simply because it is taking longer to do certain things than it did a month ago.

Whatever you end up doing, Good luck with it!

            Re: Scheduled task failing

Thanks Larry. Each Xbasic process is quite quick, but I line up several hundred of them at once. (Yeah, I could do it in two batches but that's not really the answer.)

A bunch of it is API calls which take 2-3 seconds to complete, and a bunch is automated notices via text/email, and each send of course takes a couple seconds. I started the process of moving some of that to the work queue a while ago but have a ways to go. But I agree with you, SQL stored procedures are often a terrific solution.

              Hi Steve

That is exactly what I have done in several situations, one in particular can take upto 20 mins to run, converting incoming blobs to signature images, little impact on the server.
