Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

How to zip/attach workspace including UX component for getting help

I need advice on how to zip and attach my beginners app so I can post it on the message board and ask questions about it.
I can zip and attach my workspace (below), but the web components are not included
I do have "Include Web Projects" checked
    Thanks

Re: How to zip/attach workspace including UX component for getting help

I believe your component is included. Within the zip structure you have your AnsonGolfCourse.adb project file. Also there is the ansongolfcourse.webprojects folder. With this folder is the default.webproject folder... and within this folder is your GolferLesson.a5wcmp component and other web related files. Is this what you wanted to post?

If so... excellent. Then next... what are your questions?

Thanks David, Guess I just missed it!
      Two questions:
      1. Why my submit button will not work?
      2. Why search button will not work?
      Thanks

Re: How to zip/attach workspace including UX component for getting help

Just want to confirm what you'd like to do with this UX. You've got a List control... and the Detail controls for the List. You want to click on a row in the List... see the detail for that row... edit that detail... and save.

Also, you want to search for rows in the List control based on the ID for that List.

And... what Version and Build of Alpha are you working with?

Re: How to zip/attach workspace including UX component for getting help

          V12 v3.5, build 2999, 4519

The submit button works, but the change does not show up in list control immediately, as it should

The problem with the search button is that I would like to search on several fields (custID, and first name, last name, and city)
I can only search on the Cust ID field.

I think there is a problem with the way I have the Primary Key(s) set up and the list control (Return Value) setting ???

Re: How to zip/attach workspace including UX component for getting help

Tony... part of the issue is that you're using DBF tables. They're a little bit of a pain and need to be managed slightly differently than SQL tables when dealing with Lists. If you can switch to MySQL or SQL Server or any of another few SQL sources then you'll be much better off in the long run. If not... then you can still use DBF.

The way you have your UX set up was with a List control and separate controls for Search and Detail. You then bound your Detail controls via the UX Databinding process. You don't need to do this.

The List control, in and of itself, can contain and manage Search and Detail. The List Properties sheet contains properties that you can turn on for Search and Detail View.

In order for CRUD operations to work with DBF tables you must go through a SQL AlphaDAO source to an ODBC connector. I've created one but that is unique to my machine. What you'll need to do is examine the Connection string in the List control. Edit it then click Build then click Edit on the Data Source Name. You'll need to Add an ODBC Data Source named GolferDBF and point it to your dbf table. I used the 32-bit Microsoft dBase Driver.

You'll see in the List control that you now have tabs for Detail View and Search.

The new UX I created, which works for edits and searchs is named GolferLesson_List. Shout if you run into problems.

              David,
              Thanks for your help!
Your telling me what I really didn't want to hear, but kinda knew was coming.
Making the move to SQL is a daunting task for my skill level.
I may look into it this afternoon
Thanks again for your time and effort

                Tony,

Setting up MySQL is very straight forward. And setting up an AlphaDAO connection is even easier.

You'll be glad you made the switch. And it does make life a bit easier when working with UX and Grid Components.

                  David,
I downloaded and installed SQL Server 2014 Express
Tried the Upsize Genie and got the following error when trying the test connection

                  Unable to connect
                  Database API specific error
Your database has returned the following error code and description to Alpha Five
Consult your database documentation for further information
                  ............. much more

Unless this is something easy to remedy, may be time for me to throw in the towel

                  Thanks

                    Hi Tony,

This is only a guess but you may need to download SQLNCLI; which is the sql server native client. Check in the ODBC panel to see if you have it installed.

it is not that difficult. here are the steps. despite the fact my signature says i work with mysql these steps are for ms sql.
go to ms sql and start your gui, such as sql management studio or navicat or anything that you use and create a database and call it anything you wish to call from now on, that is where you will be upsizing.
now go to alpha build a connection string to connect to that sql database using window authentication and test the connection see if that is working. if okay,
now go to the upsize genie and select the upsize and select only the tables, you do not need sets, scripts etc., using that connection string, then complete the process you will see all the tables in sql server.
you can use your mssql management studio to see the tables.
i have a video to show the transfer, if i locate it i will post back for you.
if still having problem post back with details someone will definitely help you to move your access, i think, to sql backend. that is what this forum people do.
the upsize genie doesn't do some magic it, as far as i know, only makes sure the auto increment field is numeric and correctly described.

the server name is not correct, the server is usually the computer name/sqlexpress
and you have not selected the database yet.

edit: also don't worry about where alpha puts the data. if the connection string is correct you will get the data where you wanted it.
                              see my video again.
