Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Accessing custom Xbasic functions from freeform regions

    I have a function SimulateSessionVars() that I'm trying to use in a freeform section within the search part of a grid component.

    It works fine within a server side event but when calling from this freeform section I get the following error:

    Error:Script:A5W Code line : 49 SimulateSessionVars() Function: 'SimulateSessionVars' was not recognized.

    I'm assuming this means that the function that is stored in my grid's xbasic code section is out of scope, but how do I get it in scope?

    How are you calling your XBasic SimulateSessionVars() function in your Search Freeform Edit Region?

    Is your code in the XBasic Functions section of the Grid... or is it a global function declared in the Code tab of the Control Panel?

      Hi David,

      I'm calling the code from the XBasic Functions section of the grid. I also tried using the xbasic module in the web components but it did not work and said that the property was not found. I didn't even look in the other control panel. I assumed that control panel wasn't for web projects. I didn't try the xbasic function library because when I checked this forum a lot of users were recommending using the Module instead of the Library.

        Joseph... thanks... I understand now that the function you're calling is contained in the XBasic Functions section of the Grid. It doesn't really matter too much where your function is... but it's good to know exactly where it is.

        Now... how are you trying to call that function from the Search Freeform Edit Region?

          Thanks. It would be great if I could get this to work in the Xbasic Module because I could use common functions across pages, but right now my function is in the grid's xbasic code and I should mention it works fine when used in the Grid's event handlers

          Code:
          <%A5
          '---SimulateSessionVars is the function in the grid's xbasic code I want to call
          SimulateSessionVars()

          select
          '---REBATOR/UTILITY TYPE VIEW
          	case session.UserType = "Client"
          %>

            Ok... thanks Joseph. Now I'm going to ask what it it you'd like accomplish by doing this... 'cause I think there's a better way.

            You want to run something in SimulateSessionVars and set, for example session.UserType to a value... e.g. "Client".

            Then... in your Select statement... you're testing for session.UserType = "Client"... and then you'd like to do what? What do you want to show up in the FreeForm Edit Region?

              Re: Accessing custom Xbasic functions from freeform regions

              Depending on the usertype I render different search fields in the freeform section. So "client" has a somewhat different set of fields from rebator. I wanted to use SimulateSessionVars to set the usertype and some other session variables when in working preview so that the freeform section will render properly.

              Simulate session vars checks to see if the request protocol is "a5res” and only execute if it is. I have to copy that whole function out and paste the function body in freeform sections to get it to work and sometimes I change the session vars in the function and forget in the freeform and things get messy.

                I can almost see what you're doing, but it's a bit confusing. Send me a private message on the forum with your email address and I'll contact you via email. Put together a small, simple, sample Grid with your XBasic function in place and the code you're executing in the Freeform Edit Region. You'll need to include a table... or at least a layout. Then you can email to me and I can see what's going on.

                  I figured out what was wrong.

                  My export statement was:

                  Code:
                  exports.SimulateSessionVarsEXP = SimulateSessionVars()
                  and it should have been:

                  Code:
                  exports.SimulateSessionVarsEXP = SimulateSessionVars
