Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

UX Component with List Control (Search and Detail View) and Repeating Section

    Hi All...

I have a List Control on a UX component with a Search and Detail View Part. I want to add a Repeating Section below the Detail View. What I'm curious about is the best way to go about it. Do I add the fields to the List Control or do I bind it to the Table under Data Binding?

When I go to Data Binding it says "Component has not been bound to any Tables."

Any pointers on where to do this?

    Thanks
    Joe

The Repeating Section is to show what... hierarchical data - children data - related to a selected row in the List? Updateable? If so, you're probably better off controlling the repeating section data yourself, rather than trying to get Alpha to do it. List controls have options for a parent/child setup.

You get that message from Data Binding because the List houses it's own data binding. It's kinda not really connected to the general UX. Overall, what is it you want to accomplish?

Re: UX Component with List Control (Search and Detail View) and Repeating Section

The repeating section is going to show related child data. So the List Control provides a list of Insureds or Potential Insureds. The repeating section has the policy information for each year the Insured buys coverage. The data includes the Carrier, Policy Num, Previous Policy Num, Coverage, Underwriter, Term Start Date, Term End Date, Attach, Attach Point, etc...

Right now the List is based off of the Transaction Table
Repeating section would be off of Limits

Those two tables are linkable and are currently linked using Grids passing the Transact_id to the Transact_id field in the Limits Table.

All fields are need to be updateable and new records need to be created in the Repeating section. So it would be a One to Many relationship. One Insured can have many policy renewals.

Hope that helps clear things up and thank you for your feedback.

Re: UX Component with List Control (Search and Detail View) and Repeating Section

I'll put a bunch of stuff in this message and you can figure out what you'd like to do.

By having a List control with Detail View (which are data bound)... and... a repeating section (which needs a parent)... and needs to be data bound... you are effectively making 2 calls to the server for data. One for the List... one for the repeating section.

The Repeating Section (children) must have a Parent to attach to. This is done in the Data Binding section. 2 Tables, parent/child, one-to-many relationship.

The Server-side onDialogInitialize action (which feeds the parent/child setup) has a feature that will show a List View of Keys. Have a look... and decide if you could use this instead of the List control.

And finally... here's what I've done to replicate your scenario...

I created a UX with a parent/child data bound setup. One (or more) parent controls data bound to the parent table (These do not have to be visible). A Repeating Section which holds controls data bound to the child table. Server-side actions are in place to load the data keys and save data.

Doing this I can naviagate through my records.

Then I added a List Control. In the List Control onSelect event I put this...

        Code:
        {dialog.object}.navigateRecord(this.selection[0] + 1);
Given that what you're returning from your List control is the key to your parent table, the .navigateRecord() method will navigate to your data bound record... and the repeating section will sync to that parent record. You can then update/add etc. repeating section data.

But... remember... doing this grabs the data twice. Once for the List control, and once for the data bound controls.

Re: UX Component with List Control (Search and Detail View) and Repeating Section

Thank you David. I've been playing with the onDialogInitialize and added a Search with "Load Primary Keys" but I feel the List control is much quicker at searching. I even test this "theory" using the Stop watch on my phone. Using the "Load Primary Keys" it took 3.9 seconds to load the results. With the List it took 1.3 seconds.

As for making 2 calls to the server for data. I'm not sure how much that will make a difference. I guess it depends on when the second call is made. I'm going to play with your method and see.

I've also been playing with adding an Embedded Object and creating either another Grid or UX component. The Grid I know I can Link/Filter the data. I just don't know how to do that with another UX component.

So after a lot of work it seems it doesn't pull the repeating section data consistently. Not sure why. Some records pull others don't. I know it works Grid to Grid and on a test component I built that doesn't use List Control. I'm still curious to why the List Control search is faster on a UX than the "Load Primary Keys" method of searching. Any suggestions? Have you seen similar results?
