Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Please tell us where it does not work and we will fix it. We fix bugs as they are found. As for re-hosting that is not so clear. I hope to have fast hosting with enough ram for the database within 45 days. As you know hosting is expensive so this is a major decision.

Sorry I can't be of much help there. I supply hosting for a lot of companies and Churches, but it is Linux only.
I definitely understand the costs and most of the issues.

All of this work is on a server in our Indonesian office. The work you see above was from trainess and undergraduate placements. The main core of the company is busy and it will be a month or so before things slow down.

Re: New website with free Alpha components

This is some really great looking UI's. In my opinion, Alpha should dedicate some resources over the next few versions to improve upon an already great tool set by focusing some efforts on delivering a more polished front end out of the box. In terms of examples, this to me looks pretty darn good: http://smg.datadrivensystems.co.uk/rifqon/alphawatch/

We only play with these things in our spare time.

Dave McCormack is trying hard to put together a series of webinars with give away CSS and help but we have been too busy.

Re: New website with free Alpha components

My issue is and always has been simplicity. I'm not writing a single or even 2 or 3 applications where I can dedicate time and resources to the UI. That is one of the reasons I use a toolset like Alpha, so I can spend my time focusing on the application specific business logic. When all is said and done, rather than building 1 application I'll have 60 or so all unrelated. Because of that issue, the UI often takes the first hit as that is just the gravy which would be important if I were reselling my applications. Rather they are mostly for internal use for the company I work for. The CSS would have to be pretty tightly woven into Alpha in order to benefit me under these constraints.

I think the work you have done proves the concept that the ease of Alpha can be combined with a "nicer" front end, whether Alpha makes a determination that this should be integrated directly in the framework or left up to each individual user to put their own style on their apps is something I'm very curious to follow as time goes on.

Once again, great work. The stuff you are making looks really good and certainly I can see you've put a lot of time and effort into that portion of your application.

Re: New website with free Alpha components

I take your point and we are in the process of making a style sheet with saas.

                      http://smg.datadrivensystems.co.uk/rifqon/components2/

Is the first incarnation as you can see we are not there yet.

I do think you can achieve it, we have 2 and a half programmers and one guy full time on styling. We have a girl who does nothing but the layout in photoshop. On top of this we have 2 testers who help with design. So if you followed our paradigm you would write half the code.

We are finding that time spent doing layout saves programming time.

They really do look great Michael! I agree with this sentiment as well Jeremy, I would love to see Alpha dedicate a little more time to the visual end of things. I know they have improved things with the new Alpha style, at least in terms of ease to make custom modifications to the UI appearance. It's okay for new projects but I find that moving from a legacy style like GrBlue to Alpha style is a bit of a challenge though.

Re: New website with free Alpha components

We have people who are learning. We train them in this way. The problem is we have no clear idea how to define the scope.

Again with the grid styling we tend to use templates and css, this makes moving from legacy components more difficult.

I would gladly define a popular group of controls and work our way through styling them.

Our idea has always been to combine style sheets with layout templates. We have started to play with building templates using the viewbox.

I will try to get a simple page for people to say what direction this Project should follow.

We will add some very simple little components.

You can type Alphasnip.com and we redirect.
