Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

  • Phonegap ux component change stylename runtime

Is it possible to change the stylename on single UX component within Phonegap APP based on device?
Would like to apply iOS7 style when installed on iPhone and MobBlue on Android etc.

Hi, can see that you have not had a response on this.

Have you tried creating 2 copies of the app and publishing each one to the appropriate platform on Phonegap.
I.e. have a copy with IOS7 style and phonegap profile for IOS only
    another with the Android style.
Then publish each to Phonegap separately.

      Thanks! :)

Did hope to avoid separate projects, but seems to be the solution.

Re: Phonegap ux component change stylename runtime

I wouldn't want to maintain 2 projects. Instead, take Peter's suggestion and modify it a bit. With one project, set your style to iOS7 and build just for iOS. Then, just change the style to MobBlue and build just for Android. It's a little bit of a pain but better than making code changes to 2 projects all the time.

I think this would be an interesting enhancement to the UX Component. Allow the entry of a Style Name per build platform.

The Alpha PhoneGap Builder might be able to handle something with that.

Re: Phonegap ux component change stylename runtime

I only maintain one project with develop/publish process like:
          - process develop/testing
          - - Phonegap publish for both Android/iOS with android style, looks ok on both iPad and iPhone for testing
          - process production
          - - Phonegap publish for Android only
          - - change projectstyle on same project to IOS style
          - - Phonegap publish for IOS only

It's not a big issue, but would love to see functionality which enables live style change on device.

I see it done alot in the appstore where there are two versions. Although it is a pain as a developer, I appreciate the development process as an end user to know that this version "works" for my platform. I personally have a seperate component for "small" devices and I am developing on the web where responsive design is often pretty easy. I find it much more simple in actually maintaining different "projects" because you can then test that segment without worry of disrupting the other.

What is the upshot of swapping styles if it looks good on both? Maybe you could develop your own style that works for both.
Wishing you all the success with your app!

Re: Phonegap ux component change stylename runtime

I disagree about live style change on the device. The apps are rendered with a specific style and I wouldn't want to start delivering multiple style files with an install. Build for your target... keep things as simple as possible. Separate projects for different device sizes (in a category of large or small) is different than different projects just for a style change. I agree that to deliver the best user experience you really need to design for a size... not specific... but rather phone vs tablet.

Re: Phonegap ux component change stylename runtime

Yeah I agree on that too - phone vs tablet is the best design basis and then for my field level technicians where it is OFTEN a small phone I have a stripped down experience with limited usage and so far this seems to be the BEST approach. Like I said I do NOT develop phone gap applications but rather a web application, and web applications in my opinion will eventually outlast native apps because devices change and the internet builds on itself. SO far the limits seem to be multiple image upload, and access to the sensors for geolocating a user and their device (still seems like there could be a work around) and direct access to the file system, again seems like were almost there anyways. People seem to be developing new "plugins" to access the device, but I beleive that one day the core systems are going to develop to the point where a "plugin " is not necessary, it will be able to just work. I am future casting though!

I also feel pretty liberated and not locked in by the app stores approval over what I consider to be a valued application, and whether or not I meet their idea of security and design. I just build what I want on my website, so far I'm McLoving it!

Re: Phonegap ux component change stylename runtime

Have to disgaree on that one. Web apps can't come close to native or, in Alpha's case, hybrid apps. The ability to talk directly to device hardware will outstrip web applications every time. Web apps are hampered in so many ways. No offline, no file system storage, no SQLite, no NoSQL, no push notifications... and much more. If you've got a simple, always connected app... then web is fine. Otherwise, it's limiting. If you don't need these services then that's great.

Re: Phonegap ux component change stylename runtime

Ah no offline storage? Wrong, the browser has it, though not as big... No sql, The app hits any database, no push notifications, I can send you a msg...with an xbasic script.
I don't totally disagree, but I do believe one day those native calls will be accessible by the Web, therefore one day making your claims obsolete - that's all. For now though your right, phone gap can do so much more interesting and cool stuff

Re: Phonegap ux component change stylename runtime

Offline and offline storage are 2 different things. Web has local storage - not offline storage. And local storage is minimal and volatile. Offline is the ability to work without a connection, which a browser can't do.
Web is fine but doesn't, and can't have, the ability to talk to hardware. You'll be waiting an awfully long time for that one.

Re: Phonegap ux component change stylename runtime

disclaimer: i do not have version 12, nor the tied in phonegap, so if someone were to ask me to show an example, timeout!! i cannot.
                          this thread piqued my interest,
with so many devices on the market i am sure this was raised by someone and worked on by someone, like they have variations for different browsers.
so just like anybody else, i searched using google. lo and behold, looks like this can be done via javascript.
there are lots of discussions and it seems you can add link to the proper css via javascript.
if anybody wants to play with it and have enough time in their busy schedule to spare, they can find links on the web.

                          here is one
