Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Refreshing Cascading Lists

    I have a UX with Parent list called Loads_List and a child list called Docs_List. I am using mySql.

    In the child list I have set it to use Loads_List as a parent list.

    Here is the sql statement from Docs_List:

    Code:
    SELECT Type, CategoryDocsList, FileUploadCarrier, fileUploadChar, Category
    FROM docs
    WHERE Load_FK = :whatLoadID  OR  Car_FK = :whatCarrierID
    ORDER BY CreateDate DESC
    The child list refreshes just fine except when :whatCarrierID is not populated.

    :whatCarrierID is populated from a Detail View control from the parent Loads_List.

    When a new row is created in Loads_List, :whatCarrierID is not initially populated, so the Docs_List refreshes, but cannot find any records where Car_FK = "", and it takes about 15 seconds to populate Docs_List.

    It there a way that I can conditionally refresh a child list, or conditionally ignore the "OR Car_FK = :whatCarrierID " part of the sql statement?

    What about turning off the Parent List option... and using the .refreshListData() method on the child List when/where you need it.

      Re: Refreshing Cascading Lists

      I have been using {dialog.object}.refreshListData('DocsList'); as a work around.

      I have an Action Javascript that will fire {dialog.object}.refreshListData('DocsList'); only if the control Car_FK (which supplies the value for whatCarrierID) contains a value.

      This is in the afterDetailViewPopulate event of the Loads_List:

      Code:
      var _car_FK = {dialog.Object}.getValue('Car_FK');

      if(_car_FK != "")    {

      	{dialog.object}.refreshListData('DocsList');
      }

      else if(_car_FK == "")    {

      	var lObj = {dialog.object}.getControl('DocsList');
      	lObj._deselectAll();

      }
      However, I actually need the DocsList to refresh and return "WHERE Load_FK = :whatLoadID" even if Car_FK is Null.

      The scenario is this:

      The parent Load_List has an carrier (trucking company) associated with each record.

      The DocsList contains values that identify documents that have been uploaded. There are documents associated with the load record, and other documents associated with the carrier.

      The user can click on a row in the DocsList and view the selected document.

      When a new Load record is created, a carrier is not yet assigned. And load documents may be uploaded before a carrier is assigned. At this point whatCarrierID is blank, but I still need DocsList to populate with load documents.

        Re: Refreshing Cascading Lists

        What about removing the DocsList Car_FK argument and filter from the SQL statement. The DocsList list will always show now.

        When a CarrierId is present in the Detail View, perform a .filter() on the child list.

          Re: Refreshing Cascading Lists

          Thanks David. That is the solution I needed. {dialog.object}._filterList() allows control of the sql WHERE clause, so I can conditionally retrieve just the records I need.

          Code:
          var _car_FK = {dialog.Object}.getValue('Car_FK');
          var _loadID = {dialog.Object}.getValue('Loads_List');

          if(_loadID != "" && _car_FK != "")    {

          //This returns both Load and Carrier Docs
          var params =  _car_FK + '|||c|whatcarrid\n' + _loadID + '|||c|whatloadid';
          {dialog.object}._filterList('DocsList','Car_FK = :whatcarrid OR Load_FK = :whatloadid','',params);

          }

          else if(_loadID != "" && _car_FK == "")    {

          //this returns only Load Docs
          var params =  _loadID + '|||c|whatloadid';
          {dialog.object}._filterList('DocsList','Load_FK = :whatloadid','',params);

          }

          However, when I attempt to add an ORDER clause, it does not sort.
          I have tried this with the ORDER clause in the sql query in the DocsList, and with it removed.
          Do I have the syntax wrong for this?

          Code:
          {dialog.object}._filterList('DocsList','Load_FK = :whatloadid','ORDER BY CreateDate DESC',params);

            Re: Refreshing Cascading Lists

            I guess it depends on what you want and how efficient you want/need to be. Since you have all the data you need for Load_FK... and it always shows... I'm not sure I'd perform a callback to re-filter the child List. _filterList() performs a server-side query. You have all the data you need in the child... just filter it client-side...

            Code:
            var _car_FK = {dialog.Object}.getValue('Car_FK');
            var lObj = {dialog.object}.getControl('Docs_List');

            if(_car_FK != "")    {

            //search for specific record
            lObj.setFilter(
            	{
            		Car_FK: RegExp(_car_FK,'i')
            	}
            );

            }else{
            lObj.setFilter(false);
            }
            However... if you really want to make a callback to filter the child list... then the order syntax is...

            Code:
            'CreateDate DESC'
            Alpha already knows it's an "ORDER BY" clause... so you only need to provide the field and direction.

              Re: Refreshing Cascading Lists

              I just wanted to know how to order it at the time {dialog.object}._filterList() executes.

              The help page for {dialog.object}._filterList() does not give an example of the syntax for order. Although leaving out "ORDER BY" makes sense, since "WHERE" is left out of the filter.

              Thanks!
