Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    SQL Server Connection Error

    Hi.

I've had a frustrating night... I hope someone can help!

Here's the story. I just uploaded my application to a new server with SQL Server 2016 installed on both systems (NOT SQL Server Express). The components and pages uploaded perfectly, as did the databases (some of the older components are using MS Access Tables that I inherited... more on that later).

The application lets me login, without problems (using DBF web security), AND lets me work with any component/page that uses the MS Access tables (explained above). BUT, EVERY UX or Grid that uses the SQL Server Tables gives this error:

The application works fine on the "localhost". I can log onto the Server and log in to SQL Server (Management Studio) and open and read the tables... no issues. I did NOT alter the "default packet size" on either system (both set to the default 4096). I even tried creating a new "connection string" to a new table that was created on the server (and backed up and restored onto the local machine). Again, it works fine on the localhost, but the server gives the same error as above.

Everything worked fine on the previous server.

I'm completely lost. Hopefully, someone out there has seen this before and will have a suggestion. I'd appreciate any help or suggestions.

    Thanks

    Re: SQL Server Connection Error

The problem seems to be your connection string for SQL. The very first error you see is a failed login. The login you are using locally isn't the same for this new SQL server.

EDIT: Not talking about login for your app, just to be clear. When Alpha needs something from SQL it uses the connection string you have setup to access SQL. I'm thinking you've specified a specific username & password in that connection string. And that username & password doesn't exist on this new SQL server.

      Re: SQL Server Connection Error

      Hi Mike-

Thanks for writing back. Yes, I did see that... and spent an hour trying to figure out why it wouldn't login (I connect to SQL Server databases all the time). Unfortunately, no matter how I adjust the connection string, I get the same message (I've always used just "Windows Authentication"), but I've also tried adding a user to the database... but it didn't help.

I just uninstalled and reinstalled SQL Server - no help! I get the same message. I was going to try to uninstall and go with SQL Server EXPRESS to see if it makes a difference!

      Anyway, I'm still stumped.

Is your SQL Server installation on the same machine as your Alpha Server?

            Re: SQL Server Connection Error

if everything works fine in local host but not when published, then the connection string is the first one to check as mike said
i would check the web publishing profile for that server and correct the connection string alias if it needs to be corrected. then retest again.

              Re: SQL Server Connection Error

              Hi Gandhi and David-

Thanks so much for your responses... I really appreciate the help.

I solved the problem... After much work and several hours of diagnostics, it turns out the my SQL Server 2016 installation was, indeed, faulty. I have no idea why, but no matter what I tried (logins, re-installation, etc.) didn't fix the problem. Ultimately, I did an aggressive uninstall with Revo Uninstaller and deleted the SQL Server folders and the major Registry entries. Then, I downloaded a new installation file (this one, had SP1 included... the one I was using did not (I had been adding the service pack AFTER the installation)).

Sure enough, it worked perfectly, as it had for all of my other SQL Server connections. It's very puzzling, because SQL Server Management Studio let me log on perfectly, showed no errors and let me access all of my databases.

Anyway, thank you for your help and guidance. It was invaluable. I was frustrated and, at least, it gave me places to look. I'm back up and working at full speed to catch up.
