Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    How to copy data from one table to another?

    Can someone point me into the right direction about how to go about doing this? I know I need to use an Ajax Callback, so when the user selects the entry in the list, the callback can handle the copy operation to copy the data to another table.

    I'm stumped on the syntax on how to select the table and fields I want. This is my first time doing hard coding in Alpha, as I've been using Action Javascript. I am also only limited to use .DBFs tables.

    Thanks so much!

    Here would be one way to do that. Set up a Xbasic function call to do this:

    first dim the variables you need.
    ctbl is the table you are getting data from
    btbl is the table you are putting data into
    vars is the variable used to hold the data

    dim ctbl as p
    dim btbl as p
    dim vars as p
    'open the table you are getting the info from. In this case we open the table, set the index, then use the fetch command to find the right record, then put all data from that record into the
    'variable pointer called vars. Finally close the table.

    ctbl = table.open("[PathAlias.ADB_Path]\accounts")
    ctbl.index_primary_put("acct_id")
    ctbl.fetch_find(v_id)
    ctbl.record_to_vars(vars)
    ctbl.close()

    'Now open the table where the info is to go, then enter the command to enter a new record, then name the fields you want the data to go into. enter the command to close the entering
    'of a new record, finally close the table.
    'The advantage to this method is that you complete control of what data to transfer. The field names do not have to match. The field type has to match although you could use the
    'convert_type function to convert from one type to another (shown in the 5th line of the code below.) And sizes should match as well.

    btbl = table.open("[PathAlias.ADB_Path]\accts")
    btbl.enter_begin()
    btbl.appid = vars.acct_id
    btbl.fname = vars.fname
    btbl.totalamount = convert_type(vars.total,"N")
    ...

    btbl.enter_end()
    btbl.close()

    There are other ways to do this, such as the command <tbl>.record_clone(), but that requires both tables to have the exact same structure. You could also use the <tbl>.record_content_get() or record_data_get() commands.
    I like using the method the method above because it allows for a lot of flexibility.

        Hey Mike,

        Everything in the above code works great except when trying to pull the correct selected record. It will only pull the first record in the table or if I assign a record number in the fetch_find command. If possible, can you explain how the fetch_find command can pull the correct record? The callback fires off under the OnClick event in the list properties.

        Just in case here is the code
        Code:
        function copyXB as c (e as p)

        dim ctbl as p
        dim btbl as p
        dim vars as p
        dim v_idtemp as c
        dim v_id as n
        dim rec as n

        ctbl = table.open("[PathAlias.ADB_Path]\openshifts")

        'v_idtemp = ctbl.record_data_get()
        'v_id = convert_type(v_idtemp,"n")

        ctbl.index_primary_put("Op_Id")
        ctbl.fetch_find(openshifts->op_id) 'v_id
        ctbl.record_to_vars(vars)
        debug(1)
        ctbl.close()

        btbl = table.open("[PathAlias.ADB_Path]\requests")
        btbl.enter_begin()
        'btbl.r_id = vars.r_id
        'btbl.first_name = vars.first_name
        'btbl.last_name = vars.last_name
        btbl.date = vars.date
        btbl.timeofday = vars.timeofday
        btbl.starttime = vars.starttime
        btbl.endtime = vars.endtime
        btbl.location = vars.location
        btbl.position = vars.position

        btbl.enter_end()
        btbl.close()

        end function
        Not sure if I should make a separate post for this but, I am able to get a Javascript variable (ex. var y = window['DLG1_DlgObj'].getvalue('list::openshiftslist::Op_Id');) but unsure on how to pass that variable on to the server or turn that variable into a readable xBasic variable. There is probably a better way to go about doing this but I would like to have Javascript variable "y" = xBasic variable "v_id". Is this possible?

          Sorry for the delay in responding.

          I'm not quite sure I understand. Are you trying to copy 1 record only or is there more than 1?

          Also it seems that the variable v_id is not being set. So you might modify your script like this: The e pointer has your data in it, so you need to the id number from that. Add a debug statement in here to see that.

          dim ctbl as p
          dim btbl as p
          dim vars as p
          dim v_id as n = convert_type(e.dataSubmitted.op_id,"N") 'e.dataSubmitted has a list of fields and their values
          dim rec as n

          ctbl = table.open("[PathAlias.ADB_Path]\openshifts")

          ctbl.index_primary_put("Op_Id")
          ctbl.fetch_find(v_id)
          ctbl.record_to_vars(vars)
          debug(1)
          ctbl.close()
