Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Illegal session variable value

    Hi all,

    I am getting following warning in the Xbasic Error Log.

    ==========================================================
    Fri May 05 04:20:14 2017
    Warning: Illegal session variable value.
    Session.clientid
    Session variables are restricted to character type only.
    The variable Session.clientid is about to be set with as non-character value. This code will no longer function in a future software release.
    ==========================================================

    Client id is numeric type. should I convert it into character type? My website is running good. I don't know when it will stop working. Please suggest me if you have any ideas about this. Thanks

    Re: Illegal session variable value

    Yes, session variables must be character type. If your original value is not character type, use the convert_type() function to store it as character type. Then, if you need to use the session variable as a numeric type in elsewhere in Xbasic, use convert_type() again to get what you need.

    For those who are relatively new to Alpha Anywhere: Alpha didn't always require this -- it allowed whatever we wanted. Starting with version 11 (I think) the announcement was made that we must use/have character-types. This was largely related to Alpha's path to integrate with IIS. Alpha has handled any exceptions for us up to now, but it's possible this handling won't be in future versions, so we're all best off doing it correctly now.

      Re: Illegal session variable value

      Hi Steve,

      Thanks for your reply. I am using Alpha since March 2016. I have IIS server and Standard server both running in different instances i.e port 80 and 81. Both of them uses same database and code. I am repeatedly getting 500 internal server errors on IIS server . Standard server instance is running good but goes down after 7 to 10 days. I have to restart it manually. Does it have anything to do with session warnings? I have 38 session variables in the website with more than 200 web components. Most of session variables are used as numeric type. For example, "If session.usertype=1 then"..
      If I try to change all of them, it will take lots of time. Do you have any idea, when Alpha was releasing the new version? It will be big trouble for me if they strip out these type of exception handling.

        Re: Illegal session variable value

        The number of session variables and number of components is fine. And I doubt anyone's going to guess at why your server won't stay up longer.

        I have no idea when the version will finally arrive that won't cover your variable type problems - I doubt anyone knows. But you definitely need to fix this, and set all session variables to character type.

          Re: Illegal session variable value

          All session variables must be character types as of the release of Alpha Five Version 11. Session variables created using any other type are not supported and will definitely not work as expected in the Application Server for IIS.

          For information about how to convert a character session variable to the desired type and vice versa, see https://www.alphasoftware.com/docume...on%20variables
