Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Cannot set component security.

When I right click on a component and then choose component security, I see the choices to the right. However, when I try clicking on anyone of them, Alpha just freezes for about 10 seconds and then goes back to the list of web components. I have already tried re-installing Alpha but it still does the same thing. I'm I missing some file in the folder of my project or ????

    Thank you.

    Re: Cannot set component security.

Make sure you are in the latest version of Alpha.

If it still does it, take a video of the issue and send it in as a bug.

You should also try going into web security/component security (see pic) and trying to set your security from there. Does that work OK?

      Re: Cannot set component security.

Thanks Larry for the reply. I have the latest version and no it does not work from there. I did find out however it works in other projects on this same computer but not from one of them if that is any help in solving this.

        Re: Cannot set component security.

Well, you could always create a new project from scratch, copy all of your grids and UX's over and start again with the security.

You could have something corrupted in that one project.

Or, you could go into the security settings on the current project, change a few things and then save them, just to see if that will fix whatever the issue is.

Thanks Larry. I've tried everything to no avail.

            Re: Cannot set component security.

Then, seriously, send in a bug report with a video of what is happening. Show it failing from the right click and from going into component security.

Be prepared to zip up your repo/DB to send it in so they can take a look.

                  Re: Cannot set component security.

Hi Peter, unfortunately they have been scattered all over the place while I'm trying to fix this. In another working file they are in the same folder at my *.adb file but whn I copy them to the non working profile, it still does not work.

                    Re: Cannot set component security.

I think Peter was wondering whether you were using Alpha DB tables for security or if you were using SQL tables. (I think you indirectly answered the question though.)

And when I recommended redoing the entire repository, I was not recommending you recopy the security tables.

If you have other working systems, I still think that starting a completely new repo from scratch, then copying in ONLY the base grids, UX's and pages - and only those db tables that are necessary for your data structure.

Do not copy over anything else. You should then be able to setup security again, from scratch and individually make your components for their proper security levels.

Thanks again Larry but we have tons of components and it would be a large task to redo the security on everyone of the.

                        Re: Cannot set component security.

Perhaps, the but the exercise might still be worthwhile to see if it "fixes" your issue with not being able to set your security at all. It would be one more thing to note to Alpha with your bug request and doing a create/copy as I suggested to a test system wouldn't take very long.

If the move works, then at least you know you have a way to move forward (even if you don't like it.)

If the move DOESN'T work, then you may have a larger issue with your current system.

Also check and make sure that you do NOT have a blank entry in the security tables. Somehow I had a blank entry in my member groups that caused me a major headache trying to figure out what was wrong - worth checking.
