Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

SQL Web Security tables on Amazon RDS

AA seems to be unable to use Web Security tables that are located on an Amazon RDS instance.

I am simply trying to connect to the RDS from my development server.

I have a working connection string that I can use to query the tables. So I know the connection string works.

But for some reason, AA is unable to read the Web Security tables.

    Here is a video: https://www.screencast.com/t/XiTed0er8

    I am using Version 12.4.4.5 Build 4542-4947

Any Web Security experts out there?

Does anyone out there use Amazon RDS to host MySQL data?

Does anyone have an opinion on whether Alpha should or should not be able to see web security tables on RDS?

        I'd ask Alpha.

Re: SQL Web Security tables on Amazon RDS

          Problem solved!

I did contact Alpha. After several emails back and forth, Jerry Brightbill got involved, and a slew of emails ensued. Jerry even provided some code to analyse the response returned by the Amazon RDS. Many thanks to Jerry.

For anyone that runs into this issue, here is what worked for me....

This assumes that you are using MySQL Web Security tables.

In order to use Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS) to host MySQL data, here are the steps:

Note that RDS does not support the use of Views. I had one View that I was using, So I re-wrote some code to replace the queries that were using the View, and now they directly query the tables that the View was using.

          1. Set up the RDS and make sure you can connect to it. There are several steps involved, and Amazon provides plenty of instructions, so I will not address that here.

          2. RDS uses Parameter Groups, which allow you to set some MySQL server variables. Amazon automatically sets up a default Parameter Group, which cannot be edited. So make a copy of the default Parameter Group. Name it anything you like.

          3. In the new Parameter Group, there are three variables that must be set to these values:

          lower_case_table_names = 1
          max_allowed_packet = 500000000
log_bin_trust_function_creators = 1 (this was the original default setting in my case)

          4. Now modify the RDS instance. Change the Parameter Group setting to assign the new Parameter Group to the RDS. Before saving, be sure to check the "Apply Immediately" checkbox.

          5. You must now re-boot the RDS instance.

          6. Now you can create a database, and add tables. In my case, I use Navicat. I added a new database with the same name I use for my live application, and then restored tables via "Restore Backup".

Before changing these values, I could connect to and query any of the tables on RDS. The only problem I ran into was that AA's Web Security could not see the Web Security tables. This is why this was such a perplexing problem.

lower_case_table_names is the setting that gave me trouble. In Windows, MySQL sets the default value = 1, which means all table names are stored in lower case. Amazon RDS is running on Linux, and the default value is not set.

In my case, when I changed the value of lower_case_table_names = 1, I could no longer connect to the database. I could still connect to the RDS instance, but not to the database and not to the tables.

So I changed it back to lower_case_table_names = 0, and the database became available.

Then I deleted the database from the RDS, set lower_case_table_names = 1, and then re-created the database, and restored the tables from a backup. After that everything worked.

So if you assign the new Parameter Group to your RDS instance, and re-boot the RDS BEFORE creating the database, you should not have any of the problems I experienced.

Again, thank you Alpha Software, and Jerry, for the great support.

Cool thanks for the effort of coming back to us. Good job.
