Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Can't open Alpha apps from desktop shortcuts with new build

Recently upgraded an Alpha 5 runtime installation to version 5028 (build 5088) and have since been having issues opening up desktop applications via shortcuts pointing to the .adb file. Previous versions this worked fine, however all we get when opening via the shortcut is a blank Alpha 5 window (no toolbars or anything). It seems to be opening Alpha 5 fine but stops short of opening up the application.

Looking to see if anyone else has experienced the issue or can explain why happening/provide fix. We can still open up Alpha 5 then browse to the database, however we kept all the databases in one 'shortcuts' folder to avoid having to do this.

    Any help appreciated.

rule of thumb: if the current build works, NEVER update - so long as your are desktop only, and not also web
install a prior build that works, and then leave it alone

      Hi Martin,

Thanks for the reply. We update to mitigate bugs and potential security vulnerabilities so simply not updating because we have a version that works doesn't really fly.

Yeah that seems just about it! To me, it seems Alpha Anywhere is very very prone to corruption and all kinds of strange errors anyways. Not as much as you are using the app, but more when you are developing. Every addition you make seems to be able to trigger some type of corruption. Corruption, tables open that won't close, you name it. It just seems not very stable a platform in development mode.

I think Martin is right. Desktop applications are not that much prone to daily changing threats as much as web applications. Anyway, you should always:

[1] First back up before doing anything
[2] Run the update on your app in a test environment FIRST before committing it to production.

          Best practices apply.

            Hi Fred,

Yes - we have not rolled this out and the situation has arose from our testing environment. No backup required as run through as a test.

The post was merely to find out if this has been replicated by anyone and or if a workaround is available.

              Cameron,

I can confirm issues with the new build as I have just installed it today.

I do not agree with avoiding new builds, although I do not jump on them just for the sake of a new build. Sooner or later there WILL be an update that can be used by desktop - fixes to layout table reports comes to mind. And if you wait long enough before reporting a bug, I have personally gotten a response that Alpha has too much on their plate to revisit old issues. So at that point you are caught between a rock and a hard place.

I have submitted one bug report on this build so far. Have not had your exact problem, but do have a problem with a startup form, among other issues.

              Bill.

                Thanks for your response Bill.

Going to hold off roll out and test again when new patches released.
