Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Embedding a UX component in a form

    Hey all,

I am a new Alpha developer and I'm having some trouble embedding a UX Component into a form.

I am using the book "Alpha Anywhere Made Easy" by Susan Hussey Bush to get started, and I've hit a wall where the book is not helping. On page 326 it says UX components can be combined with forms after a few UI changes (removing Panels and TabStop, it results in formatting issues supposedly).

It never actually goes into how to successfully get the UX component embedded. It just stops there. After scouring some forums it seems like I need to use an embedded xdialog supercontrol on the form. I'm not familiar with xdialog, and when I create the supercontrol it looks like I need to add a bunch of code. I'd have no idea where to start as far as coding it myself.

I found a few posts that talk about how to add a grid using an embedded xdialog supercontrol, which consists of using the "display an xdialog box" action script, where one of the options under "type: character" is a grid component.

So far I've had no luck tracking down how to embed this UX component into my form.

Could someone point me in the right direction with this? If this has already been answered somewhere would you mind linking it? I feel like I've searched pretty thoroughly for some kind of walk through but so far no luck.

Thanks very much for any help!

Nate, look at the Alpha Wikipedia and you will see a load of videos. You need to look around but V11 is a good place to start.
The instructions are quite thorough and V12 desktop is almost the same as V11.

Apologies to anyone I haven't managed to upset yet.

Re: Embedding a UX component in a form

      Hey Ted,

Thanks for the lead. I looked through the wiki.alphasoftware.com for anything regarding embedding a UX component into a form, and I have still found nothing. It may be because I've misunderstood what it is I should be searching for.

I'm using Alpha V12, and I've created a UX Web Component to create a report for a customer. I am creating a desktop application, so from my understanding I need to embed the UX component into a form so that it will run in the runtime and I don't need a web server to host it. In some of the documents I read it mentions this is possible, but never goes into how to do it. I've been pulling my hair out trying to find a way to embed this into a form, and I've found nothing. The closest I've found is embedding a grid component using an xdialog supercontrol on the form.

Is there any further direction you can give me, a link perhaps, to help me along? Thank you for your help.

Re: Embedding a UX component in a form

        Nate,

I think part of the confusion is that the UX component is a term that was not used prior to V12.

        This webinar may help:

        http://www.viddler.com/v/23df0503?su...f-e735558c920a

I wrote an email to Alpha Software last week about the lack of documentation in regard to using web components on the Desktop. The reply I got back appeared sympathetic, hopefully they'll put something together soon.

Re: Embedding a UX component in a form

          Hey Vince,

Thanks for the link! I'll watch that today. Yes I've started to notice some of my confusion is coming from the different terms used between the different versions of alpha.

I may have made some headway with my UX Component problem. I just created a blank form connected to an empty DBF database. Then on the form event OnInit() I added the action "Open a UX Web component" as an MDI Window. When I opened the form it popped up as the UX Component instead, so it looks like this may work for what I need. I'm not sure if that's a good way of doing this, I guess I'll find out soon if something goes wrong.

          Thanks again for your help!

            Nate,

The way I understand it, you don't need to embed the UX component in a form. You can use an UX component to completely replace the form.

Re: Embedding a UX component in a form

Hmm, that would be ideal. I have a blank form between the UX and the user at the moment. I was talking with an alpha employee and he said something about using action script to create the form from the UX component (at least that's what I took away from it, I may be wrong).

I created a new script and looked through some of the action script functions and haven't found it yet, but I'll keep looking and update this if I do.

Would you happen to know the correct way to replace the form with the UX Component?

Re: Embedding a UX component in a form

Nate, the only way I know is via a Super Control.
The UX is what the Dialog builder was in V11. I don't use v 12.
Let us know how uou get on after viewing the video.

                    Nate,

I am learning also but I did find many videos on the UX component.

Go to the "Help" menu and select "Video Finder". Type in "UX" you will see a couple hundred videos are available that show you how to build them and tie them to your data.

Re: Embedding a UX component in a form

                      Thanks guys,

I watched that video and it had some awesome information. Unfortunately it didn't go over how to use a supercontrol with a UX component. Whenever I try to use a supercontrol with the "Open a UX component" actionscript it gives me an error of the variable name is not "dlgTitle."

I've looked at a lot of the videos for UX components and been learning a lot. I haven't found anything there about using supercontrols with UX component/dialog either.

I decided to just make a menu page that has buttons to open the UX component. Once I figure out supercontrols I will implement it differently, but this will work for now. Thanks very much for the help!
