Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Report Help

Hello, I've got a students table and a classes table, the relation is one-to-many, I'm trying to make a report to show me a list of students who do NOT have a certain class. I tried using a filter expression of Classes_Table->Class_name <> "ABL" but this does not work. I know theres something more ive got to do but I just dont know what.

We had this report in the past but the table structure was very different. In the old structure, each class had its own field in the classes table, but that caused us to have tables that had literally over 100 fields. It was easy to see who didnt have a class in that structure by using the expression IsBlank("Classes_Table->ABL"). Now with the new structure, Im stumped on how to do this.

Here are the fields on the report.

    "Students Table" SSN, Fname, Lname.

This report is based off a set where the Students Table is the parent table. Any help is welcomed, thank you.

    Re: Report Help

Probably have to do that with a bit of manipulation.

Table.external_record_content_get() on the classes table with the appropriate filter would tell you which students (ssn field) have a particular class.
Table.external_record_content_get() on the student table with the appropriate filter (".T.") would give you all students.

word_subtract() using the two lists would remove those taking the class from the list of all students. The remainder are those who aren't.

Take the list of aren't and filter the student's table for them for your report.
    There can be only one.

a students table and a classes table, the relation is one-to-many,
you can build another set reversing this and it might be easier.

I would have to have a test app with some relevant data for my feeble mind to work it out for you. I do see your problems. I don't think it to be that hard though.
I don't want the ssn numbers, so jumble the fields if you want. Just representative data, not real stuff.

Another thought is to crosstab the set to create a report table.. You'll need to have a destination table to which you append the results of the crosstab operation because running the crosstab will wipe out any layouts associated with the result table.

WOW! This is truly a thing of beauty. This a new concept for me. Let me play with this one to apply it for my situation, this seems like a better solution.

An additional concept to use with this - make a single table set that points to the crosstab table.

Build the objects - report, form, browse, etc - on the set not the table directly.

You still see the same data from the set that you see from the table, but rebuilding the table via a crosstab operation doesn't wipe out the objects. ie report.

It's saved my bacon a number of times.
