Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Help with if/then statement

    I have a 'locate' button on a form that allows the user to find an invoice number then return to the parent form with that invoice number selected.

    Current Code is as follows:

    Code:
    inv_fnd = ui_get_text("Locate Invoice","Enter the invoice number to find...")
    IF inv_fnd = ""
    END
    END IF
    inv_fnd = padl(inv_fnd,8,"0")
    parentform.find(inv_fnd)
    brInvoices.activate()
    This works fine but now I'd like to add something like:

    if inv_fnd is found then
    parentform.find(inv_fnd)
    brInvoices.activate()
    else
    ui_msg_box("Note", "Invoice number not found")
    end if

    I cannot figure out how to get there...

    Any advice appreciated!

    How about
    Code:
    inv_fnd = ui_get_text("Locate Invoice","Enter the invoice number to find...")
    IF inv_fnd = "" END
    END IF
    inv_fnd = padl(inv_fnd,8,"0")
    myresult = parentform.find(inv_fnd)
    if myresult="ExactMatch" THEN
    brInvoices.activate()
    else
    msgbox("Invoice Number " + inv_fnd + " not found - try again")
    end if

      Two suggestions:

      "brInvoices.activate()" probably should be: parentform:brInvoices.activate()

      And

      It would be prudent to confirm mode of form before initiating this sequence. If form's mode is ENTER or CHANGE, user should discard or save before moving to a different record, right?

        This works great - thanks!

          Yes, it should - thanks for catching this...

          The parentform is read only so I suspect this isn't necessary, correct?

            Now we've discovered that about one out of every 20 times or so we run this, it doesn't land on the specified invoice number. It seems to happen on a random basis. This causes problems as the user enters invoice payments for the specified invoice and they run the risk of applying the payment to the wrong invoice number.

            I've experimented with adding a wait for idle command and it appears to work, but it doesn't make sense that it would.

            Code:
            inv_fnd = ui_get_text("Locate Invoice","Enter the invoice number to find...")
            IF inv_fnd = "" END
            END
            IF inv_fnd = padl(inv_fnd,8,"0")
            myresult = parentform.find(inv_fnd)
            if myresult="ExactMatch" THEN
            xbasic_wait_for_idle()
            brInvoices.activate()
            else
            msgbox("Invoice Number " + inv_fnd + " not found - try again")
            end if
            Thoughts?

              Brainstorming turned on...

              The script doesn't validate the user's input, so it's possible they enter the wrong invoice number.

              The script assumes the primary index for the form is by invoice number. If they run queries or search by different index that could cause a problem I suppose. It would be smart to include code in the script to set the form's primary index to search by invoice number.

              Finding the invoice requires Alpha to repaint the screen. This is among the slowest things Alpha does, especially on a network. Is the app running local on single workstation? If not, have you network optimized the workstations?

              How many workstations are using the table or set supporting your form at the same time? MIght "network congestion" account for what you're seeing?

              Brainstorming turned off.

                I always filter the parent table without fail using this code.

                Code:
                dim vfilter as C

                inv_fnd = ui_get_text("Locate Invoice","Enter the invoice number to find...")
                IF inv_fnd = ""
                END
                END IF
                inv_fnd = padl(inv_fnd,8,"0")

                vfilter="invoice_number="+quote(inv_fnd)
                topparent:tables:invoice.filter_expression = vfilter
                topparent:tables:invoice.order_expression = ""
                topparent:tables:invoice.query()

                  If you want to check for existing records, throw in a query first:

                  Code:
                  dim vfilter as C
                  inv_fnd = ui_get_text("Locate Invoice","Enter the invoice number to find...")
                     if inv_fnd = ""
                        end
                     end if

                     inv_fnd = padl(inv_fnd,8,"0")
                     vfilter="invoice_number="+quote(inv_fnd)

                     if a5_get_records_in_query("invoice",vfilter)=0
                         msgbox("NOTICE","An invoice with that number not found... try again")
                     else
                        topparent:tables:invoice.filter_expression = vfilter
                        topparent:tables:invoice.order_expression = ""
                        topparent:tables:invoice.query()
                     end if
