Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Report convert to excel not working anymore

The icon or save as option for converting a report to an excel sheet has stopped working, we are getting an error message - this only happens when the parent table within a set is the invoice table.

We were also getting error messages that invoices.ddd did not exist and on further investigation found 1500 records created from no where. The records were duplicate of earlier records but with elements of the data missing (I could identify the new records because of their record numbers). I have deleted these and since then the invoice.ddd error message has stopped. Does this mean a file has become corrupt somewhere - even if I design a new report it still won't convert to an excel sheet. The option to convert to a pdf works fine.

I have never had anything like this happen before - can anyone shed any light on what's happening - Thank you

Not sure myself. I would start with:
    1. What Build are you using.
    2. When did this last work correctly?
    3. Did you make any changes to Alpha from when the export worked correctly to when it failed.
    4. If changes were made, can you undo those changes?
    5. Have you done a database compact.
    6. Is this system on a network?
    7. Are all computers affected?
    8. Can you do a restore back to when everything worked correctly?

      1. What Build are you using.
        Build 8099
        System Addins: Build 5641
      2. When did this last work correctly?
Up to middle of last week
      3. Did you make any changes to Alpha from when the export worked correctly to when it failed.
No changes to any of the tables - it was discovered because I was asked to design some new reports and came across the problem of not being able to convert to spreadsheet
      4. If changes were made, can you undo those changes?
        No changes have been made
      5. Have you done a database compact.
Yes but it hasn't made any difference
      6. Is this system on a network?
Data files are on a network, program files are on hard drive
      7. Are all computers affected?
Yes including computers using runtime version
      8. Can you do a restore back to when everything worked correctly?
No, even though the database is backed up each night, we would have to go back several days to restore and we have had lots of transaction since then. All other features are working ok including converting reports to pdfs.
Thank you for your help with this.

So this doesn't sound like and existing operation that worked at one time and failed?

I would open up Alpha sports and see if there is a similar report to the one you are trying to convert.
Alpha Sports has invoices so I do believe that should prove you case.
Try and do an export to Excel. If it doesn't work, you can then submit a bug report.

These reports have worked for a long time, it's only been this last week that they've stopped working. That screen shot - is this Alpha Sports having the same error message?

Looks very much like it, Judith.

If you changed nothing, then it may be a Windows issue, not linking up with Excel too well.

Are you able to create a small test file outside of the bigger application and test the Report to Excel process?

One other thing. Try going into Edit/Design mode on the report with the problem. Don't change anything, just save it.
              Try it again.

Apologies to anyone I haven't managed to upset yet.
You are held in a queue and I will get to you soon.

I'm confused now. So last week you were able to export to Excel and this week you can not.

So I ask again, did you make any changes to the operating systems, windows updates, Excel updates, change your Alpha build number, toolbar, menu bar, custom script or anything else.
If this was working fine last week, something has to have been changed to break it this week.
Is this just one report or all reports?

Again, you need to make a test database or use Alpha Sports to see if you can duplicate the problem there. I found an issue with Alpha Sports trying to export a sample report.
I ran Alpha Sports using Build 7776 and the export worked fine. To me, it looks like build 8099 has a problem with the Excel export.

Did you just upgrade to Build 8099 from Build XXXX? Is this the first time you tried doing an export to Excel using Build 8099?

I am troubleshooting what appears to be the same issue. I know it worked a few months ago but not currently under build 8099. I realize there is an update available to 8245 but don't want to apply it before we do our billing tomorrow in case anything else breaks. I don't see anything in the release notes regarding a fix.

Mostly jumping into this thread to follow it. I will post if I find more.
