Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Calculated field on an embedded browse form layout

I created some calculated fields and the don't show the result unless I click on the field. I have some already on this form that work?

I can't seem to figure out why these are working?

so i thought since the dotted unlined expressions where child tables was the problem, I changed to the calculted field to calculaed the field in the parent table, but when I save and close out, it reverts back to the original calculaed field , does not save my changes

Look at putting a Refresh On Change in the Form Properties.

Then, changing the firld will trigger a refresh and show the data.

I have other forms with the same type layout with an embedded browse with calculaed fields and they show the result when the form is open. there are no events when the form is openned, but when I try to change a calculated field expression, it does not save my change, so that is why something is wrong and I can't figure it out. the one that works and the one that does not is 2 differnt databases..
I don't know if this is why but the one that does not work which is a set, the partent is a passive link table, the other db the parent is not a passive link table, the parent is refreshed with a append operation, could that be why i can't change the expression? I'm just guessing why I can't get it to work.

              Yes.
Active and Passive are two different animals.
              In general terms;
When a form is opened, the data is retrieved from the database and presented.
If you change the data, the form needs to be refreshed - either automatically or manually.
Passive is mainly for viewing, Active is for CRUD.

If you designed this app, then you just need to make the tables and sets in the failing one the same style as the working one.
If you didn't design it, you have come to the right place for assistance.

Can you show us a screen shot of your set linkage please? The visual representation, not the detail at this point, just a Snipping Tool image.

                David,
Yes. A calculated field will not save if the calculation does not resolve into a credible value. In my experience, it happens mostly when one of the elements within the calculation cannot be obtained at the moment the calculated field expression is written and attempted to be saved. All the field values, variables, and subcalculations must exist with values and able to be acquired by the calculation expression in order for the expression to be valid and able to be saved.

ok, thanks, I will have to re-think how to do this, I will go back to the one that works and make it do what I need.
                  thanks!
