Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Re: Calendar/Schedular for Alpha Desktop

I have gone through other post on calendar module and looks like most of third party tools work for Web application, not for desktop.
I still need to understand if there is any way for a desktop schedular?

I hope I will get some response here, but pretty disappointed that not easy to get responses on this forum.

For desktop, Scheduler is fairly simple. The calendar is where the issue come in. I am sure it can be done, but will be a bit tedious. Peter Wayne had one in his book "xbasic for everyone" from years ago. If anybody actually has one running today, I have not seen it, but would also be interested.

One could possibly meld a web type calendar (js,html,Java) for use with or in a5 desktop.

The short answer is yes, the real question is what you have in mind when you say "Scheduler" or "calendar module"

A booking schedule in one way (to see what times a resource has been booked for example, days over a 5 day week) can be set up with very basic set knowledge and a form, with functionality to view and enter bookings and more information relating to it. In early days I did that for a motor workshops bookings job card schedule

If on the other hand you want to see graphically what resources over a scrollable timeline are available between a certain range of dates that is quite another matter.

Make clear what you want it to show and do and many of us could offer help to point you in the right direction.

                Re: Calendar/Schedular for Alpha Desktop

@Dave - My requirement is create a schedular for medical app, there will be multiple providers and the admin should be able to book in a patient appointment for a given day/time. I refer to Calendar as it needs to have daily/weekly and monthly view. I'll refer to Peter Wayne solution if I can get hold of his book, Thanks.

@user10 - Thanks for the references, I actually looked at those post last night and need to drill down over the weekend. I think that may be the way to go..

@Ray - I am looking for just schedular to add events, (as mentioned in my reply to Dave). I don't think I need to make it complex with a timeline. As far as it is daily/weekly/monthly view with timeslots that serves the purpose. So are we saying a booking schedular can be built in A5 desktop, then why would we need Codejock. Sorry I am a bit confuse, blame it on my non technical background. Sorry. But any feedback will sure help and appreciated. Thanks

@Martin - Thanks for the email address, that's exactly sounds to be my requirement, I will send Finian an email

@Jon - Yes, that would sure help

Thanks all for your reply. I will invest some time over this weekend and see how I go.. it may take me more time though as I am not really into programming...

Heres a sample of something to play around with for direction, very novice
Simply open the only form and make some entries to try.
No tricks just a form and some support tables
I made it for illustration purposes with Jem in the UK late 2011/12
for plug in to or develop billing and analysis.
I deny any memory of how it works other than a set makes the calendar view work.

                    Ray:

Thank you for posting your example. I can see how that format may work well in some if not many cases.

                      Re: Calendar/Schedular for Alpha Desktop

I don't have time to break out a sample, but some may get a laugh out of this extreme solution from 2008.

Here's what I did for the Toy's 'R Us bike assembles in 2008. I had built the Peter Wayne calendar with some extra features, but one office person wanted the calendar IN the desktop app - it was a hybrid with the webserver right there.

I created 7 rows of 155 stacked buttons. See pic 1.

I used the entire maximum form size and filled it with buttons.

I then created a script to load variables with the assembly appointments. The button properties are set to the variables on the OnInit of the form.

The script (attached) the loaded the next four weeks from the selected date, and predetermined the largest number of appointments for each week so that the weeks were evenly sized. In other words, if there were 10 appointments on Tuesday, and only 3 - 4 on the other days of that week, that entire week used a stack of 11 variables so each day was the same size. (The extra 1 was a black space)

The user, when putting in appointments, can select a background color to highlight the appointment. In this app, the color represented a region of the North East.

This took forever.... It was done in version 8.

                        Re: Calendar/Schedular for Alpha Desktop

By the way, if anyone does this, the variables have an OnPush event that can be used to open a dialog box to modify the event, BUT, re-loading the variables / buttons may take a second or two, depending on the number of appointments.

You can also consider grouping within the dates. For example:

                        Front Door Staff
                        Tom Evans
                        Bill Davis

                        Register 1 Staff:
                        Tina Majors
                        Andrew Still

Etc, by just adding a couple spaces to the front of each name in the array.

If I should post the button form for someone, let me know. I'll clean it up, as there are gaps between buttons.

                          Re: Calendar/Schedular for Alpha Desktop

Developing a custom, fully functional scheduler is a big undertaking.

If I was doing this on the web, I would take a close look at Jim Coltz's calendar which seems highly flexible and functional.

If I was starting fresh for a desktop application I would use the Codejock ActiveX Calendar control which is capable of pretty much everything that a modern practice would need (drag 'n drop, multi-office, multi-provider, color coding etc etc) and it can be integrated into Alpha. Unfortunately the way Alpha integrates with ActiveX you get zero help in the xbasic editor so getting the syntax right is a real pain.

Here's a link to a thread with information on my old scheduler. Apart from drag 'n drop, it was pretty comprehensive.
