Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Auto close dialog box after a couple seconds

    I am using the following code to display a dialog box if no records are found. I would like the dialog box to automatically close after 2 seconds but am stumped as to how to accomplish this!

    'Conditional code follows. Executes only if the condition expression is True.
    IF a5_eval_expression("=a5_get_records_in_query("orders","Tab_No=Var->vcs_tab_no .AND.prnt_to="+chr(92)+""fry room"+chr(92)+"".AND.Qty>0 .AND. status="+chr(92)+""o"+chr(92)+"" .AND. CDATE(Created)<>"+chr(92)+"""+chr(92)+""",-1,.f.)=0",local_variables()) THEN
    'Displays a message box (style:'OK Button', image: 'Question symbol', id: 'no_recs_dlg').
    DIM SHARED norecsdlg_result as N
    DIM SHARED norecsdlg_OK_Button as L
    norecsdlg_OK_Button = .F.

    title_var = "NO Records Found"
    message_text_var = <<%text%
    There are currentlly NO records to process
    %text%
    norecsdlg_result=ui_msg_box(title_var,message_text_var,UI_OK+ UI_FIRST_BUTTON_DEFAULT+ UI_QUESTION_SYMBOL)
    'Test to see which button on the message box was pressed....
    SELECT
    CASE norecsdlg_result = UI_OK_SELECTED
    norecsdlg_OK_Button= .t.
    END SELECT
    END IF

    Hi Bob,
    The buttons to me suggest you expect some interaction with the user, but the title you chose
    implies to me that you want to display a message for a few seconds before it vanishes.

    Presuming you want the latter, have you checked the Action javascript Actions ?
    The Fade Out Message seems to be what you're looking for.

      Went for a jog since I was stumped and the solution came to me. I created a new form with my message on it, put a timer event on it to close after 2 seconds. I then opened the form as a dialog in the script and it disappears after 2 seconds.

        Hi Bob,
        I have a dozen or so dynamic dialogs like this that I have as functions that I call within scripts for messages, warnings, errors, etc. This would be for my purposes a standard message to the user. I call this function 1000 times in the code of my application. The function call is dlg_msg_box() which is a timed modeless dialog that presents with the input message and lasts for the time you designate in the open-time parameter.. Also has dialog presentation position as a parameter as character horizontal-vertical, position. The open time is defaulted in the function parameter to 2 seconds so if a time parameter is not designated in the call, the default is 2 seconds. Here it is if it might help you. A standard call would be:

        dlg_msg_box("Help Bob to make his application more robust") >>> position = center page and open time = 2 seconds

        For your script:

        dim vfilter as C="Tab_No=Var->vcs_tab_no .AND.prnt_to="+chr(92)+""fry room"+chr(92)+"".AND.Qty>0 .AND. status="+chr(92)+""o"+chr(92)+"" .AND. CDATE(Created)<>"+chr(92)+"""+chr(92)+""")
        if a5_get_records_in_query("orders",vfilter)=0
        dlg_msg_box("There are currentlly NO records to process")
        >>> do wharever else is needed
        end if

        '================

            i have a very simple function, you enter the title, text, number of seconds to display, color of text, backgound golr. a 0 in the time variable will not close it until you tell it to lose. not perfect, but good enough for my usage,
            Code:
            FUNCTION Wait_Dialog AS C (mdlg_head AS C, dlg_msg AS C, sleep_time=0 AS N, tcolor AS C, bcolor AS C, wait_msg  = .F. as l )

                dim mdlg_text as c

                mdlg_text =<<%dlg7%
            {can_exit=exit}{font=consolas,14,b}{wrap=100}
            [[bcolor]] [[tcolor]]
            {units=F}{justify=center}
            {text=50mm}{lf=1};

            [[msg]]{lf=2};
            [[txt]]

            {lf=4};
            %dlg7%

                mdlg_text = stritran(mdlg_text,"[[msg]]", dlg_msg+ crlf(2)  )
                if wait_msg = .t. then
                    mdlg_text = stritran(mdlg_text,"[[txt]]","Please Wait...")
                    else
                    mdlg_text = stritran(mdlg_text,"[[txt]]","")
                end if
                mdlg_text = stritran(mdlg_text,"[[tcolor]]","{Color="+tcolor+"}")
                mdlg_text = stritran(mdlg_text,"[[bcolor]]","{Background="+bcolor+"}")
                ui_modeless_dlg_box(mdlg_head,mdlg_text,<<%Code7%
            %code7%)
                sleep(sleep_time)
