Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Voice Input

    Hello
I have just implemented a booking in and out system for my fly fishing club.
A range of users from very competent to elderly ones.

Has anyone ever developed an application with voice input as opposed to the traditional mouse and keyboard?

Thanks for your help. It is much appreciated.

    Kind regards

    Alex

You may find it is not worth the pain and aggravation, Alex
My webkit has voice activation, but it is a novelty unless the user is tetraplegic.
I installed early versions of Dragon Dictate for a famous UK celebrity who was disabled after falling from a horse.
In those days, it was all or nothing. PC and apps all managed by voice. (We had fun teaching the dictionary swear words!)
On the assumption that you are capable of using voice input, have you actually tried it?
Unless you absolutely have to do it, for the number of users able to navigate through the process, it is probably not worth it.
Msoft have lots of options so if you could tie a field to activating the voice input - say "on arrive", the it might be a goer.
Will require user acceptance of additional software?

I wonder what most people think of the implication that the elderly are not very competent.

What a strange comment to make! I suggest you get out more. There are many elderly (75+) members in our club who are highly competent when it comes to using technology. Others are limited through failing health such as shakiness in their hands, arthritic fingers, and failing eye sight. I was exploring the possibility of using voice as an alternative overcoming these physical limitations. However, reading Ted's positive contribution above, it sounds like the technology is not quite there, and I have no desire of implementing technology which despite its claims will make matters worse.

There's a big difference between very competent and not so competent compared to "A range of users from very competent to elderly ones."
The implication was all you, even though your follow up post showed slightly different thinking.
I'm sure you'd love to think I need to get out more, but I'm not the one that (unintentionally) insulted an entire group of people with one statement.

Gregg, we are either competent or incontinent generally.
            This is true.
I went to the doc for Gout.
He asked what I usually take, so I told him "strong antinflamitory stuff " I had been prescribed .
He said, "I don't give antinflamitory medication to the elderly" Cheeky bstd!
Next time I go, I will take my spare glass eye, sneeze, drop it on the floor and see him run about.

I didn't insult an entire group of people. Why would I? Anyone reading the original post could only reach the conclusion that I was attempting to find a solution that would allow the elderly element of our club to find using the logging system less frightening.
This is a technical board for members to share and discuss Alpha-related issues. You obviously have nothing positive to offer on the question, so I will treat your response with the emptiness it deserves. How it went from a simple technical question to accusatory prejudice of an important section of society says more about you than it does about me.

                Been thinking about this.
What data are you planning to capture by voice control?
In any event, a kybd will probably be a necessity, unless the PC is on auto mode.
                Have you considered pick lists?
Might not be inclusive, but give a clue, Alex as to what/how you imagine this working.
(When the catch is in, of course)

I have been looking at it further. You are right we still need a keyboard. Most of the fields are pick lists.
Ultimately, I think Voice would add a level of complexity.
And as they say if its complex to build and use, its going to represent a potential nightmare to support.
Finally, looking at the options available, and I may be wrong, but voice control for database iput doesn't seem to have matured much since the Dragon days!
