Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Removing last 11 characters from a field ?

    Hi guys, I'm sure I have done this before, but I am struggling to remember what the command is to do this.
    I am importing an excel sales report from Ebay into my system.
    The format is not ideal, but I can manipulate it using a macro within Excel so I can import into my system in the correct format, but one of the fields has 11 unwanted characters in an address field.
    It seems that Ebay has just dumped some kind of reference data after the actual address in the same cell for no reason whatsoever. ie. Walton-on-the-Naze ebay376z5qa, so I need to remove these last 11 characters. This Ebay reference is always the last 11 characters in the cell.

    Thanks

    try
    Code:
    left(fieldname, -11)
    if you want to remove the trailing space as well either
    Code:
    left(fieldname, -12)
    or
    Code:
    alltrim(left(fieldname, -11))

        Hi again, I think I have jumped the gun. This is not working correctly. On my test record which had an address with 18 characters, all was perfect.
        On a record with just 10 Characters in the address, there were still 9 of the unwanted characters showing. ?

          This will work

          alltrim(left(fieldname,len(fieldname)-11))

            Hi, still not working.
            Example
            alltrim(left(Post_To_Address_2,len(Post_To_Address_2)-11))

            This "Brake Road ebay1234565" ends up as This "Brake Road ebay12345"
            This "Walton-on-the-Naze ebay1234565" ends up as This "Walton-on-the-Naze e"

                My first attempt was wrong.
                This presumes the string ebay is not included in the actual address.

                post_to_address = "Brake Road ebay12345"
                ?stuff(post_to_address,at("ebay",post_to_address),11,chr(0))
                = "Brake Road "
                post_to_address = "Walton-on-the-Naze ebay1234565"
                ?stuff(post_to_address,at("ebay",post_to_address),11,chr(0))
                = "Walton-on-the-Naze "

                  I just notice that you are returning the contents of a field. The field will return spaces. You need to trim these spaces before you can remove the last 11 characters.

                    Based on Ron's observation, the following will work as well, eliminating everything after the string "ebay".

                    post_to_address = "Brake Road ebay12345 "
                    ?stuff(post_to_address,at("EBAY",upper(post_to_address)),len(post_to_address),chr(0))
                    = "Walton-on-the-Naze "

                    post_to_address = "Walton-on-the-Naze ebay1234565+morerandomtext"

                    ?stuff(post_to_address,at("EBAY",upper(post_to_address)),len(post_to_address),chr(0))
                    = "Walton-on-the-Naze "

                      This option will remove the last "ebay" and any characters to the right of it.
                      It also allows for various capitalization.
                      If you want to eliminate the trailing space(s), wrap the code in alltrim().

                      post_to_address = "Brake Road ebay12345 "

                      ?stuff(post_to_address,at("EBAY",upper(post_to_address),-1),len(post_to_address),chr(0))
                      = "Brake Road "

                      post_to_address = "Walton-on-the-Naze ebay1234565+morerandomtext"

                      ?stuff(post_to_address,at("EBAY",upper(post_to_address),-1),len(post_to_address),chr(0))
                      = "Walton-on-the-Naze "

                      post_to_address = "123 Ebay Avenue ebay12345abcde"
                      ?stuff(post_to_address,at("EBAY",upper(post_to_address),-1),len(post_to_address),chr(0))
                      = "123 Ebay Avenue "

                            Alpha Anywhere is quite resilient and should be able to do the work without excel.
