Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Marking a record using a field rule

I want to mark a record using a field rule when the record changes, but setting up the field rule asks me to specify a form name and of course there is no form.

    Table.mark function in the documentation.

Apologies to anyone I haven't managed to upset yet.

thanks. I had been looking for some way of marking a record and I thought table.mark was only marking tables not individual records.

next associated issue: if I try to set up only marked records in my export operation, the setting does not work. I use the genie which gives me a list of additional filter options but when I select marked/unmarked the select criteria (where I would expect to see a setting for marked or unmarked) is from some other option, and if I reselect it I get another corrupted criteria .

If I add marked to the main filter criteria when I call the export function, it works fine. But not if I add it as an additional criterion through the export genie.

I have to admit that I would probably choose an easier way than using MARK/UNMARK (Ctrl+M, CTRL+U)
Can you outine the process please?

          If I wanted to export records which have changed, I suspect that I would;

Create a 1 byte field in the record call it "Changed"
In the table Field Rules, I would update that field with "Y" if changed in the Record Events.
Run an extract where Changed Field value = "Y"
Reset Change Field to "N" for all records.
That way you don't need to code anything really, Nick.

When you choose the records to export, there is a setting Select Records, Marked/Unmarked, Select Marked in the next UI.
          It definitely works.

I should have said I was only interested in changes to certain fields, which need to be exported to another application via a csv file. . Not sure there is much difference between what I implemented this morning and your solution.
In the field rules for the selected fields I mark the record when the record changes. Then when I do the export, I filter out every record that isn't marked.

In my release of Alpha 5 (which is an old one) the setting you referred to does not work, the settings field is corrupted. It does work however if I just add it to the main filter for the export.

            Thanks for the help!!
