Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Exporting database

Hi, I will soon be leaving my business. I will be leaving them with a few Run Times and the Alpha data on the company server, where it has been for years. However, I want to take a complete copy with me, so that I can continue to manage the company creditors and debtors from my home office for a few months, i.e. until I've closed my company. I will be using a standalone PC for this task, i.e. no server etc. Can you please advise what is the best way to export all of my current Alpha package so that it will work on my standalone PC. I will not require it to update the remote company server.

I do have a second question. My Alpha website is currently hosted on a separate PC which is attached to the same domain as the company server. The new company will not require the website so I am taking the host PC with me. I am hoping that I can simply connect that PC to a network switch along with my own PC, and then simply Publish to the new local address - as opposed to the current address on the company server. Is it going to be that simple? (Apologies for being in the wrong place with this query).

    Many thanks,
    Larry

Are the tables SQL or DBF?

Good question Ted - apologies for not mentioning it in my question. They are all dbf files on the local server

Try just zipping the application from the Control Panel.
You may need a bigish pen drive.
On your chosen PC with Alpha on it, Import it.
        Test it.

Or, create a RT version and install it on said chosen PC.

Main thing is the finances. Copy out the necessary tables and you can always reconstruct later.

        Retirement sucks BTW.

Thanks for that Ted. So I will try the 'Zip Workspace' route and see how I get on. Hopefully if I zip it while my PC is logged onto the network, I can save it to my hard drive. Many thanks.

I'd be interested to hear why you say retirement sucks :)
I have recently built an enormous shepherds hut in my back garden, from where I will be doing a million different things - I have a To Do list as long as your arm. So I'm really looking forward to it. I've worked too hard for too long, and at 76 my old brain won't be lasting too much longer, so I've got to open the throttle and go for it - doing the things that I want to do and not what I'm forced into doing by my business.

I may even have time to work on my Alpha skills...

My approach is to zip the folder (and subfolders) containing the entire database.andTransport it to your computer and unzip it - place it wherever you like. You will have to install Alpha, too, of course.

I think Larry has many versions of Alpha installed.
Just in case, I suggested a RT build.

                      Larry,
Congrats on the retirement. If you have things to keep you busy, it's all good!
You wrote this" "Can you please advise what is the best way to export all of my current Alpha package so that it will work on my standalone PC."
Several questions are needed to completely answer your need.

                      Questions:
                      1. Does your stand alone home PC have an installed Developer or RT version of Alpha installed, and it is the same version that is being used on the company server?
                      2. Does this "complete copy" include the entire Alpha application (all dbf, ddd, ddm, ddx, cdx, fpt, sem, set, sex) and ancillary files (PDF, XLS, DOC, TXT, etc) ?
                      3. Is the entire copy under a single directory so that everything is under the folder of a5.get_path()?
                      4. What is the size of the "complete copy"?

I have Alpha version on my laptop the same as my on my company server and have the entire company Alpha application and ancillary files on the company server under a single folder E:\URSA. The entire company data and alpha application database is 46 GB. I simply attach an external USB drive to the server and copy the entire content of the E:\URSA folder to a folder on the USB drive using Windows file explorer. It take a while but when finished, you attach the external USB drive to your home computer, start Alpha that is installed on the home computer, open the database directly from your USB drive and run it with all the data on the USB drive. Or copy the USB drive folder to your home computer and run it all on there. I don't bother with zipping and unzipping. This is all predicated on your have the version of Alpha installed on your home computer.
                      Mike W

Problem is Mike that once Larry goes, he may not have access to the system he's sold. Pen drives are great for backups and stuff like this.

Hello Mike and thank you for your detailed response. Please see my answers below:

                          1. My home PC does have both Developer and RT installed, and it is the same version as the application on the company server.
                          2. Yes, the copy does include all of the files.
                          3. And they are all in one directory.
                          4. The total size is 567Mb - small compared to yours, but then we are only a small business.

I did go through the ZIP process as previously advised, but did then unzip the files onto a 2TB portable drive, and it all works fine.

After I'm gone, which now looks like 1st September... I won't need to update my home version again, i.e. the company version and my version will evolve separately as life goes on. My version is only so that I can manage my debtors and creditors etc until I have fully closed the company - the person buying my business is not buying the actual company, just the customer data, stock and goodwill. I may be called on to maintain the version I am leaving on the company server, but they haven't thought that far yet... But I won't be leaving them with Developer, only RT's.

I believe I will remain an Alpha user as I will probably start a small jewellery manufacturing business, and also intend to interfere in UK politics - its a obviously a total mess at this time.

Meanwhile I thank you and Ted for your help and advice.

                            Hi Larry,
Great, I do just what you are doing except I skip the zip-unzip and copy the entire directory straight to the 2 TB portable drive (USB connection). I use a 2 TB Samsung SSD.

                            Hi Ted,
Same concept as a pen drive but more horsepower!

Mike, I have so many cradle and usb disks that I use for secure backups - easy to put in the safe.
Also got a Synology Disk Station on WiFi as a server too, 2x2tb RAID setup. Really cheap. Had it about 8 years.
Great for dumping "system images" and restoring double easily.
