Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    How do i count concurrent users???

    I have tried many ways to count concurrent users... my latest attempt used a5_registration_licenseEx_inuse("C:\Hair2008Dev.muf",License#)... all variations that i have tried --> 0 users
    Has anyone developed a function or script that works??

    Feature is deprecated David
    Only way I can think of is to create a front end which logs a user in and out.
    But we know how good users are at doing that!
    Might still work in V11 or very early AA V12?

      I think that I have found a way :-)

      A5 Concurrent Users

      a5_registration_license_inuse() doesn't work !!!
      Instead create a UserList table and populate it when autoexec runs...

      'UserList Table
      'Usernum Numeric 6 0
      'Username Character 100 0
      'Login Time 17 0
      'Logout Time 17 0
      'Machine Character 50 0
      INDEXED ON Usernum

      'Autoexec
      Use 'A5 DataBase Exit Code

      'UpdateUserList Table
      DIM Global VarUserName As C
      DIM Global VarUserNum As N
      DIM FullMachineName

      'lets create a record in the UserList table so we know who has / is on the database
      FullMachineName = api_getmachinename()
      VarUserName = USER_NAME()
      if len(VarUserName) = 0 then
      VarUserName = "Database Is Not PWD Protected"
      end if
      UserTbl = Table.open("userlist")
      UserTbl.enter_begin()
      UserTbl.username = VarUserName
      UserTbl.machine = FullMachineName
      UserTbl.login = Time("", now() )
      UserTbl.enter_end(.t.)
      VarUserNum = UserTbl.usernum 'UserTbl.usernum is an autoincrement field... initiallized when record is created
      UserTbl.close()

      'A5 DataBase Exit Code
      Code = <<%code%
      ui_msg_box("Notice", "The database about to close - Global Variables will be saved.",UI_ATTENTION_SYMBOL+UI_OK)
      'script_play("SaveGlobalVars")
      'script_play("RemoveThisUeer")
      UserTbl = Table.open("userlist")
      UserTbl.index_primary_put("Usernum")
      UserTbl.fetch_find(VarUserNum)
      UserTbl.change_begin()
      UserTbl.logout = Time("", now() )
      UserTbl.change_end()
      UserTbl.close()
      %code%

      ON_DATABASE_EXIT(Code)
      to remove the user from the list

      ... hope this helps someone! :-)

        Very nice idea David. Excellent piece of coding.
        Have you tested it?

          Hi Ted... thanks for comments..
          Yes I have tested it on 5 different database applications... with slight modifications it is working without problems :-)

            Yes that works if Alpha is exited normally.

            There are a many ways to kill a process or exit abnormally.

            You probably need to clean the table once in awhile.

            It does point out what user is having difficulties and when the session was started.

              I have a desktop app that starts when the user logs onto the computer.
              This logs the login activity to a sql database, then assigns a logout time when the user logs off or is logged off.
              It's not perfect, but I think it accomplishes the main goal.

                I have done something similar but it doesn’t always work. We are using Microsoft terminal server loading a runtime application. I’m logging each user to a table when they login and logout.

                Where this fails is when Microsoft terminal server detects a lack of activity for a given amount of time and disconnects the terminal server connection. This kills the Alpha app without logging the user out from the table.

                I did write code to automatically shut down open alpha apps at 8 pm each evening. If an app is open, this code will update the table and then shut down the app. But this rarely works as Terminal server has already killed the app.

                  Gosh,
                  Concurrent users means to me the number of users logged into my server and has an Alpha application open. Me... I just open the Task Manager and it shows me all the users logged into the server that have alpha app open.

                    I have a file for all users logged on and if one gets off without deleting from the file will show up as still on. My mastermenu which never closes sends out a call to see if they are on every 60 seconds. If they are on, their value turns green, otherwise it remains dark red - so any user can push a button on the master menu and wait 60 seconds and it will tell you who is on as well as their computer name. (all the ones with a green color value)
