Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

That could be a Windows violation. Windows updated recently?
if you installed Alpha in your Prog Files folder, Windows does not like you writing to files in that folder.
    3 suggestions;
Try running as Administrator. Right click Alpha icon and select it.
Run the Compatability Check. Same right click.
Reinstall outside of the Prog Files folder.

For some reason, my response to you did not "stick" At least I don't see it posted
first thanks so much for getting back to me!
Windows has not been updated since the problem occurred
Ran in Admin mode but no change
Ran a compatibility check it found an issue with alpha but no suggestions on how to proceed

I could use your guidance for the reinstall
Do I delete the program (current version of Alpha Five) on my desktop using the Windows uninstaller?
Do I get the program from the Alpha Five site? I understand your note about not using the program files folder

you left out light candles and hope for the best! :)

Questions, a comment and a suggestion.
        1) Which version of Alpha are you using?
        2) Where did you install it from? CD's?
        3) What is your PC operating system version? Win10/11 something else?
        4) Was Alpha ever running properly recently?
        5) When was the last time it was running correctly?

Something must have changed else you would not have the problem.
Have a good think about whether you installed any new or updated software between the last successful operation of Alpha and the present. (I recently updated my Logitech wireless keyboard software and it caused serious unexpected issues.)

Try this before uninstalling and reinstalling. (many threads on the Forum about how to)
Run a System Restore to a previous Restore Point, earlier than the time when you noticed the problem.

        alpha01.jpg

You may not notice Windows updates running in the background, but when they are, it can affect the operation of Alpha.
Try restoring to a previous restore repoint before removing and reinstalling Alpha.

YES past Saturday. No new software... no updates...however I was just notified that an new Windows update will be installed tonight.

I'm leaving the country today, back on the 29th, and will pick up on this issue immediately upon my return... perfect timing? a question for you. IF I can't find the issue would you consider allowing me to compensate you for your time and have you log on to my system remotely to identify and rectify the problem? If you are near the NE (I live in Vermont) I will be happy to treat you to a weekend at an Airbnb for you and a guest or compensate you with American dollars (I think they still work) I would offer you a kidney but my ex-wife took one of those. Again I am so appreciative of your assistance.

I will put you in touch with someone your side of the pond. I'm in the UK.
See what any updates do, and when you get back, see about restoring to an earlier time.

Have a good Christmas if you celebrate it.

                Hi Hunter,

Do you have and did you look at the system dump file Alpha created ?
If needed, it's in the %userprofile%\appdata\local directory.

I like Ted's idea of using System Restore...it can be a real time saver.

Enjoy your time out of the country...

                  Hi Hunter,
Doubt I'll catch you before your travels but I have a question that I believe is pertinent. When exactly do you receive this error message? Does it happen on application start up - say when the autoexec is initiating, or does it manifest sometime during the execution of the application sometime after the application has opened? Vermont, huh? I lived in Burlington for 5 years during my medical residency. Both my children were born there. Lovely place, good memories. And to have it be said, with interface apps like Zoom, UltraViewer and others, no need to travel. Let's catch up when you return.

                    Hello everyone!

For what it is worth, I have experienced the same issue and first reported it about 6 months ago. No answers yet but I think I have some input that might help. I tried to access the "dump file" yesterday hoping it would give me a clue. It did but not in the way one might think. Not only could I not access the file, I could not even see the directories that led there! Why? A Windows access violation! This error we are talking about happens at seemingly random times. However, I think it only happens when A5 has a reason to create a log file. Perhaps not, but that seems to fit my experience. Maybe, the FIX will come if the gang in Burlington, MA decides to write the log file(s) to an Alpha subdirectory instead? Don't know but I hope this helps uncover this mystery.

my own experience with this kind of error is that you have given Alpha a command/request that is impossible to complete.
